1 Welcome everyone! Please post any information that you think will help someone else, based on your own experiences.
They should only deal with useage of nutrition and nutritional supplements.
You never know, your words might save another very important life or ease another's suffering!
And there is no better service you could provide to the whole human race than that. God bless you.

2 To correct the excessive omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in the diet, we should avoid omega-6 EFAs rich fats and oils and supplement the diet with omega-3 EFAs rich fats and oils.

Omega-3 EFAs are available in flax seeds, in cold ocean fish (sardine, salmon, mackerel, and herring), and in fish oil supplements.
Here we have to make a distinction between Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA.
ALA is a short chain omega-3 EFA found in flax seed, and in flax seed oil. EPA and DHA are long chain omega-3 EFAs.

ALA has little biochemical function except to contribute to cell membrane fluidity, and to be the raw material to make EPA and DHA.

The conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA is a slow process. In best conditions 5 to 7 percent of the ingested ALA is converted into longer chain omega-3 EFAs only.
People that can not convert enough ALA need food and supplements containing EPA and DHA.

3 TO RESTORE OUR HEALTH: "the long and the short of it is that the only real way to restore our health is to increase our consumption of food and/or supplements that already contain
the omega-3 long chain essential fatty acids EPA and DHA.

4 PEANUTS vs. SHRIMP: It is worth mentioning that an allergic reaction to shrimp is always much less severe than the allergic reaction to peanuts. The reason for this difference is very simple.
Aside from the allergens it comes with, peanuts contain omega-6 EFAs exclusively, the EFAs that boost immmune reaction, while shrimp are rich in long chain omega-3 EFAs that are, as we have seen,
the brakes fo the immune system. (Doc Ed, The Longevity Institute)

5 EFA – Essential Fatty Acids - ALLERGY the way Kingmaker understands it, simplified…. (no guarantees)… just the struggle on a complex issue.

More needs to be said about EFAs and allergies. I can't buy normal EFAs even though I sell them through American Longevity. I need to find out first if a person is an allergy type before I let them buy EFA from me. I would suggest a different EFA (from NSI) if they are allergic types, since EFA is necessary to make all the other minerals work the best they can, so they do need them.

Omega 3 is the only one wanted by ‘allergy types’. Omega 6 incites immune response, often causing allergy because of over-response, while 3s suppress it. Omega 6s come from food all over America, like French Fries, vegetable oil and salad dressing, but 3s don't come in at all. Even all 3s aren't good for allergy types. Flax Seed Oil, which is a 3, was not the best for me, being only a short-chain building block which my body was unable to use to build long chain since I have a damaged immune system, like all allergy sufferers.

With any autoimmune disease, Flax Seed Oil is not good enough in spite of it being an Omega 3, which we need so much. EPA and DHA, (the 'long-chain best of all EFA ("end-results")') that we do need can only be found in cold water oily fish, namely salmon, anchovy, sardine, herring and mackerel. I wonder how much of that is in the American diet? I must laugh. Very little, as Doc Ed says. We must supplement. We simply must. And mine has to be specific Omega 3-EPA/DHA only. Not the typical product on the market, Omega 3-6-9. This, I have discovered, is important, although so few know it. But research it for yourself, please!

Some of my allergy is already cured, I believe, but I understand that it may take up to 2 years before I will be totally allergy free. Still, what a wonderful piece of knowledge. And I can now eat shrimp! Thank you, Doc Ed. Kingmaker recommends NSI Mega EFA Omega-3EPA & DHA ($13.99) to solve allergy problems. Just click on the link below to purchase.

8 Folic Acid May Prevent Age-Related Hearing Loss Folic Acid Supplements may prevent age-related hearing loss in older men and women, says a new double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial from the Netherlands. The Study, published in the new issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, followed 728 men and women between the ages of 50 and 70 who were randomly assigned to receive either a Folic Acid supplement of 800 micrograms per day or a placebo for three years. Lead Author Jane Durga and her colleagues from Wageningen University Hospital Maastrict, reported that the Folic Acid-Supplemented group exhibited lower age-related hearing loss in the low frequency region.

9 Tips on taking Osteofx:

Refrigerate product once opened ( taste much better cold).
Shake bottle before each dose.
Carefully/slowly pour 1 level kitchen tablespoon and take directly off spoon.
How much to take: 1 tablespoon in morning 1 tablespoon in evening at dinner time or at bedtime.

If you enjoy eating plain yogurt or drinking "Kefir" a yogurt probiotic beverage, it is delicious to mix 1 tablespoon osteofx into 1 cup of Kefir/or 1 cup yogurt and eat/drink. It taste like a pina colada/coconut yogurt shake.

Calcium, when taken at bedtime, relaxes the muscles, and makes one sleep sounder.
Spacing out the doses twice a day provides a more steady stream of nutrients in the body, as opposed to taking everything once a day.
A person with a chronic condition or serious pain/insomnia can even space the doses out every 6-8 hours (3-4 times a day) to further maximize absorption at a cellular level.

Hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,

Brenda Patrick, RN

10 This is really an eye opener.... Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before.

WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash therisk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% lesslikely to develop bladder cancer. And now for the properties of

COKE:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola intothe toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a coke or a glass of water?

11 Tea 'healthier' drink than water Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers. The work in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition dispels the common belief that tea dehydrates. Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, but it can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, UK nutritionists found. Experts believe flavonoids are the key ingredient in tea that promote health. Healthy cuppa These polyphenol antioxidants are found in many foods and plants, including tea leaves, and have been shown to help prevent cell damage. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it Lead author Dr Ruxton Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, and colleagues at Kings College London, looked at published studies on the health effects of tea consumption. They found clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack. Some studies suggested tea consumption protected against cancer, although this effect was less clear-cut. Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening. Dr Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it." Rehydrating She said it was an urban myth that tea is dehydrating. "Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid. "Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth," she added. There was no evidence that tea consumption was harmful to health. However, research suggests that tea can impair the body's ability to absorb iron from food, meaning people at risk of anaemia should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes. Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation Dr Ruxton's team found average tea consumption was just under three cups per day. She said the increasing popularity of soft drinks meant many people were not drinking as much tea as before. "Tea drinking is most common in older people, the 40 plus age range. In older people, tea sometimes made up about 70% of fluid intake so it is a really important contributor," she said. Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation said: "Studies in the laboratory have shown potential health benefits. "The evidence in humans is not as strong and more studies need to be done. But there are definite potential health benefits from the polyphenols in terms of reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancers. "In terms of fluid intake, we recommend 1.5-2 litres per day and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink." The Tea Council provided funding for the work. Dr Ruxton stressed that the work was independent. Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/health/5281046.stm Published: 2006/08/24 09:51:47 GMT © BBC MMVI

12 DO YOU KNOW... the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...it gets very interesting:
1. Both have the same amount of calories.
2. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
3. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
4. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
5. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
6. Butter tastes much better than margarine and it enhances the flavors of other foods.
7. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years. And now for Margarine :
8. Very high in trans fatty acids... Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
9. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)
10. Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)...
11. Increases the risk of cancers by up to fivefold...
12. Lowers quality of breast milk...
13. Decreases immune response...
14. Decreases insulin response.

AND, HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! (the most disturbing facts....):
1. Margarine is but only ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC .
2. And, margarine is initially BLACK , but it is DYED YELLOW to look like butter .

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) .. it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? Yuk!

14 Omega -3s "Crucial" To Bone Health in Later Years.

Getting the right balance of Omega-3s and Omega-6s in the diet may ward off much of the bone loss seen with post-menopausal osteoporosis, say US scientists. Much of the research on omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, has focused on their benefits for the heart and mental health.

But a recent study adds to mounting evidence of their role in bone health. "Our lab and others have shown that omega-3 fatty acids help promote bone formation," said Bruce Watkins, professor and director of Purdue University's Center for Enhancing Foods to Protect Health.

15 Omega-3s Lower Lipids, Reduce Cardiac Mortality.

Consumption of EFA's (Omega-3 essential fatty acids) reduces the risk of cardiac mortality in intervention trials better than statin drugs, according to a research review published in the Archives of Internal Medicine (165, 7: 725-30,2005).

Researchers at University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland, reviewed results of randomized controlled trials that compared a lipid lowering intervention with placebo or usual diet with respect to mortality. Compared with control groups, the risk ratios for cardiac mortality decreased 22 percent for statins and 32 percent for Omega-3 fatty acids.

16 The UK Body Backs Health Claim for Omega-3s:

Fish Oil supplements and foods fortified with marine-sourced omega-3 fats on the UK market have gained the scientific go-ahead to promote the heart-health benefits of their products.

The news lends further backing to an Omega-3 health claim in future regulation, currently under discussion by MEPs. The US FDA has also approved a health claim for Omega-3 fatty acids in foods and supplements. The FDA-approved health claim was submitted by Dr. Joel Wallach and American Longevity and had positive comments submitted to the FDA by Kraft Foods and the Oregon Health Sciences Institute.

18 More support for omega-3 calming ADHD kids
6/22/2006-

Supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 improved the attention span and hyperactivity scores of young Australians, and was rated better than the common medication Ritalin. The study adds to a growing number of studies looking at the effect of fish oils on the behaviour and learning of kids, and reports in the UK suggest the British government may even be considering omega-3 and omega-6 food supplements in schools.

19 EFAs May Protect Your Eyes Higher intake of Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) benefits eye health, according to two studies published in the latest Archives of Ophthalmology. In the first study, researchers from the University of Sydney reviewed longitudinal associations between dietary fat and incident age-related maculopathy (ARM) from participants in the Australian Blue Mountains Eye Study (1992-1999). A total of 3,654 persons participated. Persons with the highest vs. lowest quintiles of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat intake had a 60 percent lower risk of incident of early ARM. Consuming fish at least once a week dropped the risk by 40 percent, while thrice (three times) weekly consumption netted a 75 percent reduction. The second study used data from the U.S. Twin Study of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) to assess the impact of Omega-3 intake, fish consumption and cigarette smoking on incidence of AMD. Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, Boston, reviewed data on 222 twins with AMD and 459 twins with no AMD or only early signs. Current smokers had almost twice the risk of AMD while past smokers had a 1.7 fold increased risk. Increased intake of fish and higher intake of omega-3 EFAs were both inversely associated with AMD.

20 In Europe It’s Fish Oil After Heart Attacks, but Not in U.S.

By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL Published: October 3, 2006 ROME

Every patient in the cardiac care unit at the San Filippo Neri Hospital who survives a heart attack goes home with a prescription for purified fish oil, or omega-3 fatty acids.

“It is clearly recommended in international guidelines,” said Dr. Massimo Santini, the hospital’s chief of cardiology, who added that it would be considered tantamount to malpractice in Italy to omit the drug.

In a large number of studies, prescription fish oil has been shown to improve survival after heart attacks and to reduce fatal heart rhythms. The American College of Cardiology recently strengthened its position on the medical benefit of fish oil, although some critics say that studies have not defined the magnitude of the effect.

But in the United States, heart attack victims are not generally given omega-3 fatty acids, even as they are routinely offered more expensive and invasive treatments, like pills to lower cholesterol or implantable defibrillators. Prescription fish oil, sold under the brand name Omacor, is not even approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in heart patients.

“Most cardiologists here are not giving omega-3’s even though the data supports it — there’s a real disconnect,” said Dr. Terry Jacobson, a preventive cardiologist at Emory University in Atlanta. “They have been very slow to incorporate the therapy.”

The fact that heart patients receive such different treatments in sophisticated hospitals around the world highlights the central role that drug companies play in disseminating medical information, experts said.

Because prescription fish oil is not licensed to prevent heart disease in the United States, drug companies may not legally promote it for that purpose at conferences, in doctors’ offices, to patients or even on the Internet.

“If people paid more attention to guidelines, more people would be on the drug,” Dr. Jacobson said. “But pharmaceutical companies can’t drive this change. The fact that it’s not licensed for this has definitely kept doctors away.”

For example, on Solvay Pharmaceutical’s Web site for Omacor, www.solvay-omacor.com, the first question a user sees is, “Are you a U.S. citizen?”

If the answer is yes, the user is sent to a page where heart attacks are not mentioned. (In the United States, Omacor is licensed only to treat the small number of people with extremely high blood triglyceride levels.)

So community doctors do not learn how to use the drug. Lack of F.D.A. approval also means that insurers will not pay for treatment with Omacor. Approval from the agency for the use of the drug in heart disease is not expected soon.

A study published last month in The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found that only 17 percent of family doctors were likely to prescribe fish oil to their patients, including patients who had suffered a heart attack. There was a great need, the authors concluded, to “improve awareness of this important advice.”

The fact that fish oil is also sold as a nutritional supplement has made it harder for some doctors to regard it as a powerful drug, experts said.

“Using this medicine is very popular here in Italy, I think partly because so many cardiologists in this country participated in the studies and were aware of the results,” said Dr. Maria Franzosi, a researcher at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan. “In other countries, uptake may be harder because doctors think of it as just a dietary intervention.”

In the largest study of fish oil — conducted more than a decade ago — Italian researchers from the Gissi Group (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell’Infarto), gave 11,000 patients one gram of prescription fish oil a day after heart attacks. After three years, the study found that the number of deaths was reduced by 20 percent and that the number of sudden deaths by 40 percent, compared with a control group.

Later studies have continued to yield positive results, although some scientists say there are still gaps in knowledge.

This summer, a critical review of existing research in BMJ, The British Medical Journal, “cast doubt over the size of the effect of these medications” for the general population, said Dr. Roger Harrison, an author of the paper, “but still suggested that they might benefit some people as a treatment.”

Dr. Harrison said he believed that people should generally increase their intake of omega-3 acids, best done by eating more fish.

Still, he acknowledged that it was difficult to eat foods containing a gram of omega-3 acids each day. “If you ask me do I take omega-3 supplements every day, then, embarrassingly, the answer is yes,” said Dr. Harrison, a professor at Bolton Primary Care Trust of the University of Manchester in England.

“I, too, am caught up in this hectic world where I have little time to shop and prepare the healthy foods I know I should be eating,” he said.

It seems natural for Italy to be at the forefront of the fish oil trend and home to the largest clinical trials. Scientists have long noted that Mediterranean diets are salubrious for the heart and theorized that the high content of broiled and baked fish might be partly responsible.

But the landmark Gissi-Prevenzione trial of fish oil had methodological weaknesses: the patients treated with prescription fish oil pills were compared with untreated patients, rather than with patients given a dummy pill. This meant that, despite impressive results, the trial did not meet the F.D.A.’s standards for approval. Yet by 2004, regulators in almost all European countries, including Spain, France and Britain, had approved Omacor for use in heart attack patients.

Marylou Rowe, a spokeswoman for Reliant Pharmaceuticals, which owns the license for the drug in the United States, said that further trials of Omacor would be needed for it to be licensed for heart attack patients in the United States. But she refused to discuss a timetable.

The American College of Cardiology now advises patients with coronary artery disease to increase their consumption of omega-3 acids to one gram a day, but it does not specify if this should be achieved by eating fish or by taking capsules. But over-the-counter preparations of fish oil have much less rigorous quality control and are often blends of the two fish oils know to be beneficial in heart disease with other less useful fatty acids.

For that reason, Dr. Jacobson of Emory gives the prescription drug, “off label,” to cardiac patients, even though the F.D.A. has not approved it for that use. “Then I know exactly what they’re getting, and there is no mercury,” he said.

He said he tells patients who cannot afford the prescription version that they can take the over-the-counter supplements, although there is uncertainty about the dose and they probably need three to four pills a day.

In Europe, meanwhile, research on prescription fish oil, which is now thought to act by stabilizing cell membranes, has gained momentum. The Gissi Group is conducting two huge trials using fish oil in patients with abnormal heart rhythms and in patients with heart failure.

21 Omega-3 and Antioxidant Combo Could Ease Inflammation A combination of Omega-3 fatty acids and the flavonoid quercitrin (quercetin) may work to reduce inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids have previously been linked to a reduction in markers of inflammation, particularly in relation to Cardiovascular Disease. For gut health however some studies have reported that omega-3 supplementation may not be beneficial since this can impair the colonic antioxidant system. This could be remedied, say researchers behind the new study, by including an antioxidant compound, such as the flavonoid quercitrin along with the omega-3s. The new study is published online in the Journal "Clinical Nutrition" (doi: 10.1016/j.clnu. 2005.12.009). Adding quercitrin to omega-3s may have an added advantage of improving stability of the oils which are susceptible to degradation from oxygen, heat and light. Quercitrin can be found in Ancient Legacy's Vita Food tablets, SupraLife's Cell Shield and Youngevity's Anti-Aging Daily Premium Pak. However studies indicate that other antioxidants may have the same effect. Antioxidants can be found in most Youngevity products.

22 Scientists investigating the effects of green tea antioxidant EGCG on mice's brains believe their positive results may signal its use as a preventive or treatment of Alzheimer's disease in humans. EGCG is the most potent antioxidant polyphenol in Green Tea and has been repeatedly studied in labs for its purported anti-cancer properties. "The findings suggest that a concentrated component of Green Tea can decrease brain beta-amyloid plaque formation", said senior study author Dr. Juan Tan.

23 Curcumin (Turmeric), found extensively in curries, could boost the body's ability to clear the build up of plaques in the brain that are linked to Alzheimer's disease, suggest results from a small laboratory study from the US. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and currently affects over 13 million people worldwide. The direct and indirect cost of Alzheimer's disease care is over $100 billion dollars. "Curcumin improved ingestion of amyloid beta by immune cells in 50% of patients with the disease. These initial findings demonstrate that curcumin may help boost the immune system in Alzheimer's disease patients," said Dr. Milan Fiala from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

24 Tomato Juice Prevents Emphysema In Animal Model Consuming tomato juice "completely" prevented emphysema in mice exposed to tobacco smoke, report researchers from Japan. The results suggest smokers and non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke could benefit from daily intake of tomato juice (although you should always avoid tobacco smoke altogether). "Smoke induced emphysema was completely prevented by concomitant ingestion of Lycopene from tomato juice", wrote lead author Satoshi Kasagi in the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Molecular Physiology. (Published online October 2005)

25 Antibiotic Overuse is common in children with frequent sinus and ear infections because Doctors routinely prescribe antibiotics for these conditions.

Antibiotic overuse weakens immune systems by killing off friendly intestinal flora (Lactobacillus Acidolphilus). “When good bacteria or friendly flora are destroyed, Candidias (Candida Albicans) Yeast overgrowth occurs.” Interestingly, kids with allergies have been found to be deficient in the friendly flora (Lactobacillus Acidophilus). According to this study of allergic children, every child in the study was found to be deficient in this organism.

Did you know? Over sixty percent of all pediatric doctor’s office visits are for earaches and sinus infections. Antibiotics are the usual choice of treatment in the US, which I believe is the biggest contributing factor to antibiotic overuse. However, antibiotics upset the natural balance in the colon causing an overgrowth of Yeast (Candida Albicans). In turn, the overgrowth of yeast and their toxins get absorbed into the bloodstream causing various allergic reactions. The immune system has to go into overdrive to remove the toxins and gets tired, in which the immune system is now compromised.

Repeated rounds of antibiotics, essentially antibiotic overuse, made my son worse over the course of five years instead of better, because his immune system was gradually becoming weaker. As soon as he was done with a ten day round of the antibiotics the following week he would be ill again. He became antibiotic resistant and Amoxicillin no longer worked. Antibiotics at a price of $200.00 or more with $30.00 co-pays became the norm. I was so frustrated because I did everything the doctors told me to do and he was worse not better. This is because the toxins given off by Candida Albicans overgrowth get absorbed into the blood stream causing various allergic reactions, which weakens and wears down the immune system.

SOLUTION: Break the cycle of antibiotic overuse and get the digestive tract & the immune system healthy again the natural way by restoring the good bacteria that occur naturally in the intestine. The good bacteria are called friendly Flora or Acidophilus Lactobacillus, the stuff (live & active cultures) in yogurt. Only you would have to eat buckets of yogurt to replenish a healthy supply in your colon.

By taking Lactobacillus Acidophilus in capsule or powder form you can reverse antibiotic overuse and boost the immune system. The best L. acidophilus provides 1 to 1.5 billion live cells per dose.

RESTORE FRIENDLY FLORA NATURALLY with Acidolphilus.

This in turn improves digestion.

IMPROVED DIGESTION = BETTER NUTRITION = HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Dr. Rubin states, “that virtually every state of health is affected by the GI tract…It all starts in the small and large intestines… Modern civilizations internal health is threatened by antibiotic overuse, fluoridated/chlorinated water, unsafe vaccinations, and etc.”

Note: Friendly flora is also destroyed by too much sugar/carb intake, alcohol, certain drugs, pollution, environmental toxins, bacteria laden food, food sensitivities/ allergies, food additives, and etc. Read the label, you want 1.5 billion live cells per dose.

26 Prescription drug abuse is rising. The abuse of prescription drugs in some parts of the world now rivals the use of all other illegal drugs, the UN's drugs watchdog has said.

The issue is a major problem for the US, Canada and Mexico, the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) said in its annual report. Drug crops replacement schemes had not been "very effective", it added, and alternative measures were needed. The smuggling of drugs by mail also increased in 2005.

Internet pharmacies:

The abuse of prescription drugs, especially painkillers and inhalants, was identified as a major issue for the three North American countries by the Vienna-based agency. It expressed particular concern about the situation in the US, where it said numerous measures taken by the government had failed to stem the rise. It is much more complex than initially anticipated to halt the illicit cultivation of [drug] crops - Hamid Ghodse President, INCB. Users were from "all age groups, including schoolchildren", the report said, adding that nearly 8% of all Americans aged 12 and above were using illicit drugs. "The sale of controlled drugs from illegally operating internet pharmacies" was part of the problem, the report said.

INCB President Hamid Ghodse said he feared the trend could develop in other parts of the world as well.

Schemes rethink:

The report also said programmes to replace illegal drug crops with legal crops, particularly opium poppies and coca leaves grown by farmers in developing nations, had not been working well. The schemes should be rethought and extended beyond rural communities to cities "mired in the drug problem", Mr Ghodse said. However, the report acknowledged that most countries implementing replacement schemes had seen a drop in growth of illicit crops.

In Laos, the total area under opium poppy cultivation dropped by 75% from 1998 to 2004, while in Colombia, the total area under illicit cocoa bush cultivation decreased by more than 50% from 2000 to 2004. The report said Afghanistan remained the top illicit opium producer, accounting for 87% of the world's supply in 2005. The report also urged governments around the world to screen all routes of incoming and outgoing international mail. It also recommended limiting the number of entry points for parcels to control consignments more effectively. The report also highlighted the rapid increase in the use of the highly addictive synthetic drug methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth. 27 Would you like some good news about bird flu for a change? Scientists in the UK recently tested a standardised extract of black elderberry called Sambucol. In a laboratory experiment, Sambucol effectively neutralised the H5N1 bird flu virus. This is positive, but it's a little too early to call it promising. If H5N1 mutates into a virus capable of spreading from human to human, and if Sambucol is effective in neutralising that mutation, THEN we might really have something. In the meantime, Sambucol is available right now for use against the seasonal flu. In the e-Alert "The natural remedy that can halve the duration of flu" (21/1/04), I told you about Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, a virologist who created Sambucol by isolating compounds in black elderberry that disable the protein that viruses use to infect healthy cells. In two human trials conducted in Israel and Norway, subjects with the flu who took Sambucol significantly reduced their recovery period compared to subjects who were given a placebo. On average, Sambucol subjects in both studies reduced their recovery time to about three days. Average recovery time in the placebo groups was between six and seven days. In another laboratory study conducted in 2001, Sambucol was shown to increase the production of inflammatory cytokines - the proteins that regulate the immune system. Researchers believe this response may help activate the immune response. More research will be required to fully demonstrate Sambucol's effectiveness in neutralising flu virus - especially H5N1. In the meantime, you can find Sambucol through sources on the Internet.

28 Infectious disease and pneumonia prevention and treatment with essential oils and aromatic medicine.

Essential oils an effective alternative:

Essential oils can offer an effective and yet safer and gentler alternative to antibiotics. With the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria and new and stronger viruses (H5N1), which we call “super germs,” health practitioners in many countries have turned to essential oils for treatment of their patients. While many drugs have only one, two or three active ingredients, an essential oil may have several hundred compounds, Rose damascene has over 350 identified compounds along with many others that have yet to be identified. The complexity of the natural essential oil compounds is what renders their active ingredients safe when used according to aromatheraputic guidelines and what prevents the super germs from becoming resistant.

While essential oils have proven themselves through scientific examination to be effective in infectious diseases, one of their finest uses may be found in their ability to slow or render inactive pathogens and thus prevent a full blown infectious condition. We will look first at how we can use essential oils to protect ourselves and our families.

Prevention, what steps you can take to prevent becoming infected.

Our first line of defense is to prevent contamination at point of contact with the flu or other infectious germs. According to the statement by Laurie Garrett, coming in contact with items touched by those infected with the flu such as doorknobs, shopping carts, or shaking hands will spread the flu virus. We have several ways in which to protect ourselves from picking up germs:

The first being to wash your hands frequently with disinfectant soap and water. Do not use commercial antibacterial soaps as they only kill the weak germs and thus are helping to create the strong resistant germs. To your liquid hand soap you can add 20 to 30 drops of Deep Cleanser to make it antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. Use this often when you are out in public places or in contact with anyone who has symptoms of cold or flu. Carry a smaller size of this soap in your purse or in your pocket so you can use it in public restrooms. Keep in mind this is a place where you are very likely to come in contact with germs.

In addition to the above hand cleanser, you can make an antibacterial, antiviral disinfectant spray that can be used on toilet seats, doorknobs, shopping carts and other areas where you touch items that other people have touched. To make the spray add 20 to 30 drops of Deep Cleanser to 4 oz of distilled water in a blue glass bottle with a fine sprayer. Shake well and spray onto items you want to disinfect. You may want to make up a 2 oz size to carry with you or for travel. Use 10 to 15 drops of Deep Cleanser to 2 oz of distilled water in 2 oz size blue spray bottle, shake well. It is important to start with distilled water if possible, as most waters have various contaminates.

To make a disinfectant hand lotion (unscented if possible) you can add a mixture of 10 drops Eucalyptus globulus, 10 drops Tea Tree and 5 drops Peppermint to 4 oz of hand lotion. This is a good anti-infection hand lotion and is cooling and pleasant smelling and can be used in place of the waterless antibacterial hand cleaners that are sold in stores.

Use Deep Cleanser in your washing machine and dishwasher to prevent germs from being passed between family members. To your washing machine add 10 to 12 drops when you start the water. To the dishwasher put 5 to 6 drops in with the soap before starting.

Use Eucalyptus globules as an addition to your household cleansers to disinfect garbage pails, clean floors and other household cleaning projects. For a mop bucket you can add 10 to 12 drops when adding the water. For other cleaning projects add 10 to 12 drops per gallon of water used.

To kill germs that are in the air, Lemon oil diffused has been proven to be the most effective for airborne pathogens. Diffuse into the air with a good diffuser (electric) for 15 minutes 2 or 3 times a day. You could also alternate or substitute To Be Well for Lemon if you desire. Make sure to keep your Lemon oil in a cool place away from heat. Do not leave the lid off for extended periods of time. If your Lemon oil oxidizes it will not be as effective as you expect.

During periods of colds and flu, protect yourself and your family by building your immune system. Use 1st Defense on your feet or To Be Well for children when you are getting dressed in the morning and again when you are preparing for bed. 3 to 4 drops of 1st Defense on the bottoms of each foot for adults and 1 drop (1 year olds) 2 drops (2 year olds) or 3 drops (3 years old to age 10) of To Be Well on each foot for children, the elderly or those with liver conditions.

At the first sign of throat infection or sore throat, use Dr. Penoel’s Tea Tree Lick. Place one drop of Tea Tree on your little finger lick it off, swish around to mix with saliva and swallow. Can repeat as necessary every 5 minutes up to 5 times. Most people get results by 3 to 4 times and usually the sore throat does not return. For children 3 years and younger apply to the throat and gland area topically, dilute 3 to 4 drops in a teaspoon of grapeseed oil.

What to do if you or someone you know comes down with the flu:

The first consideration with a viral infection particularly one as lethal as H5N1 is to realize the rapid rate at which it multiplies and takes over the body. The best treatment will be what I call the “French Intensive” method of applying essential oils as recommended by Dr. Penoel. That is to apply essential oils frequently and intensively until you see results. As this particular flu seems to target the lungs and cause death through a kind of pneumonia we will look at that area first.

You will need a good nubulizer type of diffuser for inhalation therapy that can deliver a medicinal dose of essential oils into the air in very close proximity to the person infected (approximately 1 to 2 feet being careful not to get in the eyes). At the first indication of the flu begin diffusing 10 drops Ravensara, 5 drops Lemon and 5 drops Lavender mixed together in the diffuser. Diffuse until oil is gone or up to 15 minutes. Repeat this application 3 to 4 times a day. Ravensara oil is specific for pneumonia, Lemon kills germs and Lavender helps to heal the lung tissue.

Alternate the above application with 15 to 20 drops of Breath of Life to a quart of water in a cold water vaporizer. Use between applications of the nubulizer diffuser. May also vaporize Breath of Life at night while the person is sleeping.

Ravensara can also be applied to the soles of the feet 3 to 6 drops on each foot for adults can reapply every hour until you see results then 4 times a day until symptoms are gone. 1 drop on children 1 year or less (Ravensara is safe at this application amount for newborns), 2 drops for 2 year olds and 3 drops for children 3 to 10 years old. For children apply 3 to 4 times a day. As I stated before, Ravensara is very effective and has an affinity for pneumonia type conditions and has been very effective with application through the feet.

Breath of Life can be diluted 6 to 10 drops in a tablespoon of grapeseed oil and used as a rub on the chest and back over the lung area and then apply a warm towel or other warmth holding fabric to the area. For children under the age of 6 use 3 to 6 drops in a tablespoon of grapeseed. Children under 3 years of age use 1 drop of Ravensara and 1 drop of Eucalyptus radiata to 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil and use in place of the Breath of Life.

1st Defense applied to the soles of the feet to boost the immune response, for adults applying 3 to 4 drops on the sole of each foot every hour during the time you are awake for up to 8 to 10 applications when you first begin to come down with the flu. May use this application directly after the Ravensara foot application.

For children use To Be Well instead of 1st Defense applied to the soles of the feet to boost immune response. 1 drop on sole of each foot ages 1year, 2 drops ages 2 years and 3 drops ages 3 to 10 years, every hour for up to 5 hours then every 4 hours if they are still awake. This application can follow directly after the application of Ravensara to the feet. Children under the age of 6 months use 1 drop Ravensara instead of To Be Well. This recommendation is slightly different than what we had for prevention as it is to be used more intensely which delivers more essential oil to the blood stream.

Eucalyptus radiata can be added to water and used as a sponge bath to help control fever. You can add 10 to 12 drops of Eucalyptus radiata to a quart jar of room temperature to slightly cool but not cold distilled water, shake it up well and pour into a bowl. Soak a wash cloth and wipe down the body of the person with the fever to reduce their temperature. The content of 1.8 cineole will help the body not to exceed a safe temperature. Make sure to monitor the person as Eucalyptus can cool a person very quickly and make them chill.

If the patient is in serious condition or is not responding quickly enough they may need to take essential oils internally. For adults you can make up capsules of essential oils diluted in olive oil and for children you can dilute the essential oil and then add it to applesauce. The following essential oils are on the GRAS list as generally regarded as safe for consumption. Still keep in mind that phenols found in essential oils can irritate mucus membranes. Do not swallow these oils without containing them inside a capsule to protect the tissue of the esophagus.

For adults who do not have a history of liver problems (phenols are hard on the liver), you may take the large 00 gelatin capsules sold at health food stores, remove the top and fill the large bottom section ¾ full of olive oil. Next add 1 drop of Thyme ct. thymol, 1 drop of cinnamon, and 1 drop of clove. Replace the cap and take 1 to 2 capsules 3 times a day. If you do not experience stomach irritation you can increase your drops to 2 of each of the recommended essential oils. If you experience stomach irritation, dilute your essential oils (1 drop of each) into 1 teaspoon of olive oil and then fill your capsules with the more diluted oil. Do not make up more capsules than you can use in 2 to 3 days as they may deteriorate or dissolve.

For children 3 years and older you may mix 1 drop of Tea Tree, 1 drop of Ravensara and 1 drop of Eucalyptus radiata into 1 teaspoon of olive oil. From this diluted mixture you can add 1 drop of oil mix to a tablespoon of applesauce and give to the child 3 times a day. Children, under age 3, do not give them essential oils internally but use on the feet. The children’s oils are non-toxic as recommended.

Along with the above protocol, you may need to address depression and anxiety caused when people experience severe traumatic situations and loss. To help sleep and physical relaxation you can apply To Be At Peace to a tissue and slip inside the pillow case of the person when the are in bed. It can also be diffused when you are not diffusing something else.

Geranium is a good balancing and anti-depressive essential oil and could also be diffused or applied to a tissue. The same with Lavender, which is known to be a natural relaxer.

To conclude: There are a couple of more recommendations I have for combating the flu. First and foremost, you should eliminate fast foods, sugar, and highly processed foods from your diet as they deplete the immune system and the body. Secondly, you should be supplementing your diet with all the essential 90 nutrients that your body requires to function properly. There are also two other products that I would recommend and that is the Super KB for its ability to help regulate the build up of water in the body, and the Immu-911, which can help to build the function of the immune system.

Disclaimer: This material is for educational purposes only to make people aware of the coming threat of the Avian Flu, and other flu virus’. It does not constitute a medical recommendation. It you believe you are sick or about to become sick you should consult a profession health care provider. Preferably one who is familiar with nutrition and aromatherapy.

29 I hope none of us ever need to use this information but if so, it could be a Life Saver. RECOGNIZING A STROKE During a BBQ a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ - had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. It only takes a minute to read this- ----- A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough. Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: 1. *Ask the individual to SMILE. 2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. 3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 999 immediately and describe the symptoms to the ambulance. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

30 A new study researching the effects of salt intake suggests that people who reported eating less salt than is recommended by UK and US government guidelines were 37 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular causes than those who ate more. Dr. Hillel Cohen and colleagues from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, including Dr. Michael Alderman, President of the International Society of Hypertension, completed the follow-up study with data from the National Health & Nutrition Examination Surveys in the US. "This was an observational study, and not a clinical trial, so we can't really conclude from our findings that low sodium intakes are harmful. But our study certainly doesn't support the idea of a universal prescription for lower salt intake," said Dr. Cohen. He also said that the study shows that even after adjusting for total calorie intake, age, and smoking status, people who had less than the recommended daily salt intake were significantly more likely to have died from cardiovascular causes than people who ate more salt.

31 A calcium ``salt'' contains calcium along with another substance, such as carbonate or gluconate. Some calcium salts have more calcium (elemental calcium) than others. For example, the amount of calcium in calcium carbonate is greater than that in calcium gluconate. To give you an idea of how different calcium supplements vary in calcium content, the following chart explains how many tablets of each type of supplement will provide 1000 milligrams of elemental calcium. When you look for a calcium supplement, be sure the number of milligrams on the label refers to the amount of elemental calcium, and not to the strength of each tablet.

32 Low Selenium Linked To Higher Risk of Osteoarthritis Insufficient levels of Selenium may raise the risk of knee osteoarthritis, US researchers reported this week. A team from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that for every additional tenth of a part per million of selenium in volunteer's bodies, there was a 15-20 percent decrease in the risk of knee osteoarthritis.
"Our results suggest that we might be able to prevent or delay osteoarthritis of the knees and possibly other joints in some people if they are not getting enough selenium", said study leader Dr. Joanne Jordan. The findings were reported in San Diego, California at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

33 New Help for Arthritis Sufferers, Suggests Study A naturally occurring compound supplement - methylsulfonylmethane - (MSM) - could offer arthritis sufferers short-term relief from knee pain. A new study, entitled "Efficacy of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in Knee Osteoarthritis Pain: A Pilot Clinical Trial," suggested that the popular dietary supplement, which contains sulfur, could help
reduce the number of knee replacements carried out each year.
Sulfur is well known to be beneficial for the body's connective tissues, and MSM is a popular supplement. The authors of the new study, Linda Kim, Leslie Axelrod, Nick Buratovich, and Robert Waters all from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona and Paul Howard of the Arthritis Health Center in Arizona, presented their findings at the recent 20th Annual Meeting
of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

34 Dr Joel Wallach had this disease renamed after him - Wallach's vertigo. His theory is that calcium deficiency causes overgrowth of the bone matrix leading to pressure on a nerve coming through the skull. He suggests 2000mg calcium with 1000mg magnesium daily in divided doses.

35 Please understand that the key to good health is COMMON SENSE!

If the dosage is one of something, please don't take two because 'it must be twice as good'. This simply isn't true!

Pay attention to the ingredients and their amounts on everything you take. You don't want to overdose on Vit. A or manganese. Vit. A gross overdose has been known to cause brain tumors. Manganese overdose could contribute to Parkinson's. Too much magnesium will give you diarrhea, for instance. So don't take another product as well if you are getting enough of something in one product. Pay attention! Consult "How much you need". KNOW your nutrients!

If you feel awful, it might be because you are taking TOO MUCH of everything rather than too little! Back off everything and start again, one at a time, slowly and listen to the results your body gives!

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY is the most important wisdom of all! It is smarter than you are and it tells you when you need something or when it has too much. Pay attention to what it is telling you when it craves this or rejects that. You would be as amazed as I am when you compare what it craves this week with the symptom of the deficiency you are suffering this week! It is uncannily accurate when you aren't!

Everyone should start with half the dosage on the bottle and see if that helps before increasing to the stated dose (meant for a 240 lb. man!).

LESS IS BETTER than 'more' for your body. America has a real mental problem with that. Your body takes a hint from very little and gets to work immediately. Just give it a chance. Don't be one of the many who are killing themselves simply from gross EXCESS!

For instance, don't ask yourself "Can I eat more on a second helping?" Instead ask half way through "Is this enough to sustain me for now? Until the next meal?" You will be surprised the first time you try this attitude. And your body will thank you! A meal is not a contest.

The same concept is true with our products. If you take something like Tangy Tangerine today, with all the requirements of all supplements (except calcium), then don't also take an energy drink like Rebound or EQ Factor or Sports Tech that has the same things in it (just about). One or the other! Or add the energy drink when needed, AFTER you have done something to deplete what you have taken, like mowing the grass or playing a basketball game USE COMMON SENSE!

And understand that YOUNGEVITY is a company that has combined many companies, so it has much duplication of types of products. Choose one! For instance, don't take Glucogel, Joint Plus and Flex Flow on the same day. Those are the same joint category in 3 different companies that merged. Flex Flow is SupraLife, Joint Plus is Ancient Legacy, and Glucogel is either Ultimate (if caps) or Majestic Earth (if liquid). You only need one... Consult "Categories" and choose one (or 2 if theraputic amount required). But KNOW what is required and KNOW what you are taking!

So PLEASE pay attention, and PLEASE use COMMON SENSE! That's the only way to good health.

Advised with love and caring, Kingmaker

37 Omega-3 and Antioxidant Combo Could Ease Inflammation

A combination of Omega-3 fatty acids and the flavonoid quercitrin (quercetin) may work to reduce inflammation.

38 Pneumonia 'needs less treatment'

Shorter courses of antibiotics can be used to treat pneumonia Doctors can safely treat community acquired pneumonia with fewer antibiotics, say Dutch researchers. Current guidance recommends antibiotic treatment for seven to 10 days but little evidence supports this strategy. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that three days of antibiotic treatment were just as good as an eight-day course.

Experts said shorter drug courses may be effective in other infections and would help fight antibiotic resistance. Community acquired pneumonia is one of the most important reasons for the prescribing of antibiotics in hospitals, and reducing treatment duration could result in a big drop in use of the drugs.

"For a lot of antibiotics we don't really know what the optimum treatment is" Dr John Paul, consultant microbiologist. Researchers compared the effectiveness of discontinuing treatment with amoxicillin after three days or eight days in 119 adults admitted to nine hospitals in the Netherlands with mild to moderate-severe community acquired pneumonia. In patients treated for three days and eight days, the clinical success rate at day 10 was 93%. By day 28, the effectiveness of three-day treatment was 90% compared with 88% for eight day treatment. Both groups had similar improvement in symptoms, x-ray results, and length of hospital stay.

However, the researchers did not look at people who had severe pneumonia. Antibiotic resistance Dr Jan Prins, lead researcher at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam, said there were no studies which had looked at this issue. "What we found was it was completely the same for three or eight days for the vast majority of patients with pneumonia.

"There was a study published last year which showed there is a correlation between antibiotic used in the community and resistance so if we can reduce consumption while still getting results that is important. " In an accompanying commentary, Dr John Paul, consultant microbiologist at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, said the study suggested current guidelines recommending treatment for seven to 10 days should be revised.

Wisdom "For a lot of antibiotics we don't really know what the optimum treatment is. "It's amazing that a simple thing like community acquired pneumonia hasn't been properly addressed but this study done with statistical rigour has shown that treatment for seven to 10 days is not necessary." "The perceived wisdom is that its a bad thing to expose people to antibiotics unnecessarily. "The guidelines should be looked at by the British Thoracic Society," he said and added that in the mean time individual physicians were free to use shorter courses of antibiotics if they felt comfortable doing so.

Professor Richard Wise, chair of the government's specialist advisory committee on antimicrobial resistance, said: "Community-acquired pneumonia is an important and common disease for which antibiotics are currently indicated. "Anything that reduced exposure of patients to antibiotics reduces the possibility of emergence of resistance is to be welcomed."

39 For inflammation of the colon, I have found that the following helps me a lot:

-Omega 3 LONG CHAIN essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA)

-Aloe vera capsules

-Acidophilus

-Selenium

Try it. You may also find the help that I did.

40 Don't let this governor steal your medical freedom...

I am mad as Hell. And you should be too. The drug company Merck has bought control of the Texas governor's mansion. And your state could be next. Last week, the governor of Texas signed an executive order mandating the vaccination of all preteen girls with Merck's new vaccine for cervical cancer.

Gardasil is a vaccine against human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer. This virus is spread only through sexual contact. Not through coughing, sneezing, or stepping on a nail. And regular PAP smear tests can detect it before it becomes cancer (and there's an easy treatment for a positive PAP test, which I'll explain in a moment). So at best, the vaccine isn't necessary.

At it's worst, though, the vaccine is very dangerous. If you get pregnant within one month after vaccination, there's a higher risk of birth defects. And that's just the beginning. This vaccine, like most vaccines, has aluminum in it. I've shown you in the past how aluminum causes many health problems, including Alzheimer's disease and heart problems.

The study conducted on Gardasil proved this point very clearly. The researchers split 21,000 subjects into two different groups. One received the vaccine. The other received a placebo. Surprisingly, both groups had a few participants who suffered from arthritis after the shots. And the overwhelming majority of both groups had adverse effects, such as local reactions (rashes, etc.).

Sounds like it couldn't be the vaccine, could it, since the placebo shot recipients had similar problems? Ah, the devil's in the details. Turns out both the vaccine and the placebo had one thing in common - they both contained aluminum! And both groups discovered that aluminum is indeed a poison.

While I hate vaccines for this very reason, I hate the drug company's manipulation of the government even worse. It's one thing to offer these poisons on the open market, where you have the freedom to decide if you want to take it or not. It's another thing completely to mandate these poisons.

This would be bad enough if the drug were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be good for you. But I don't know of any such drug. And Gardasil is far from proven. The vaccine has no known period of protection (requiring boosters every few years - and more aluminum). Furthermore, the studied population was only followed for 18 months. There's no data on long-term repercussions. Even the FDA admits, "Gardasil has not been evaluated for the potential to cause carcinogenicity or genotoxicity." Why? The researchers didn't look for it, and the FDA didn't require it for initial approval.

How was Merck able to pull this off in Texas? First, the Texas governor received $6,000 from Merck's political action committee during his re-election campaign. One of Merck's three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, the governor's former chief of staff. His current chief of staff's mother-in-law is state Rep. Dianne White Delisi. She is a state director for an organization called Women in Government. Merck provides funding for this organization, which is busy working on compulsory Gardasil vaccination for school entry. Are you connecting the dots?

I am astounded that government and the public would buy into another product with limited testing (and huge known aluminum risks) from Merck - a company that wantonly kept a killer drug (Vioxx) on the market. Do you really trust this company to look after your well being? I sure don't. This whole thing stinks to me. I hope it's putrid to you. The billions this political coupe will reap Merck will help the company offset the huge financial losses coming from the Vioxx lawsuits.

Can you do anything about it? First, if you have children or grandchildren in the target population, take all measures to protect them. Sign a religious waiver for all school required vaccines. If you are in Texas, storm Governor Perry's office with mail about this brazen surrender to Big Pharma. Demand your legislators to hold him accountable. Bring it up at school PTA meetings.

If you don't live in Texas, do the same in your state. Merck wields enormous power nationwide and your state could be next. The Merck Gardasil steamroller is moving fast and may already be unstoppable. A similar bill is working its way through the Virginia congress. And 18 other states are already considering such a bill.

Consider boycotting anything made by Merck. In future elections demand an accounting of all campaign contributions from Big Pharma for a candidate to receive your vote. Express your outrage in letters to the editor.

And what about cervical cancer? Women not sexually active or who are monogamous have a very low risk of cervical cancer (unless their partner is promiscuous). PAP smears are one of the few screening tests that pass muster with me. They are a must for women with multiple exposures. If your sexual values (morals) are high, and you practice safe sex, and you get yearly PAPs, the benefit, if any, from this vaccine is greatly diminished or non existent.

If you have a positive PAP screen, cheap vitamin A is one of the best treatments for any type of skin or papilloma virus. I've seen many abnormal (but non-cancerous) PAPs reverse with 100,000 units daily along with 15 mg of folic acid.

Yours for better health and medical freedom,

Robert Jay Rowen, MD

41 Vitamins 'benefit divers' health'

Vitamin doses can reduce ill-effects of scuba diving on divers' circulation, a study suggests. The scientists from Croatia and Norway gave vitamins C and E, which work as antioxidants, to divers, the Journal of Physiology reported. The vitamins stopped ill-effects of the dive on the cells lining blood vessels, which can lead to high blood pressure and other associated diving problems. But diving experts said the vitamins would have a limited impact.

The intervention showed a positive effect

Ante Obad, lead researcher The researchers, from the University of Split School of Medicine in Croatia and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology carried out the study on seven professional divers before a 30-minute, 30-metre dive. They performed two dives 24 hours apart, with doses of vitamins C and E administered two hours before the second one.

Six of the divers took part in a second trial eight months later, in which some were given antioxidants while others received a dummy pill. The team found that antioxidant treatment prevented endothelial dysfunction, which stops the cells lining blood vessels working properly, causing high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is relatively common in divers and can lead to conditions such as pulmonary oedema - fluid on the lungs which can be found in divers.

Decompression

It is thought endothelial dysfunction is caused by gas bubbles getting into the circulatory system during and after decompression from dives.

Lead researcher Ante Obad said: "The intervention showed a positive effect. Although generally safe, diving may be associated with serious, and sometimes fatal consequences, which are usually related to decompression sickness. "This raises the possibility that pre-dive intake of antioxidant vitamins may prevent some of the negative effects of diving."

But a spokesman for the London Diving Chamber, which offers medical advice and treatment to divers, said the use of antioxidants such as vitamins C and E would have a limited effect.

"Antioxidants basically remove excess by-products form the blood system. But the impact on diving-related illnesses would be pretty insignificant. "Divers do not routinely take them."

42 Hopes for Alzheimer's treatment Scientists at Cardiff University have developed a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Researchers said they had created an antibody which could block the production of brain chemicals linked to the debilitating disease. Dr Emma Kidd, who led the research team, said the results of the tests were "highly encouraging". There is no known cure for Alzheimer's, which causes irreversible loss of brain function and memory. The disease affects one in 20 people aged over 65 and a fifth of all people aged over 80 in the UK. The results of the study show that it is possible to decrease production of a protein called amyloid, which is believed to be the main cause of the disease. Brain functions Deposits of amyloid build up in the brain, preventing it from functioning properly. The antibody will reduce this build-up, improving the patient's memory and quality of life, the researchers claim. Dr Kidd said: "Our results are highly encouraging at this stage. "We believe that our approach could lead in time to a new therapy for this distressing and debilitating disease as it should prevent or reduce the irreversible deterioration of a patient's memory and other brain functions. "This would also reduce the burden on carers, usually family members, who look after patients in the earlier stages of the disease." Funding Dr Kidd added that it was possible the antibody could be used as a preventative treatment for people with a family history of Alzheimer's. The work was carried out at the university's Welsh School of Pharmacy and was funded by the Alzheimer's Society. A final treatment could take several years to develop and the team are now seeking more money for the next stage of the work. Professor Clive Ballard, from the Alzheimer's Society, said he was "thrilled" to have funded the work. He added: "We hope people will understand how important it is to invest more in research into all types of dementia, so that we eventually may have a selection of new treatments to change the lives of people with dementia and their carers." The research will be published on Friday in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. 43 Pillows can harbour harmful fungi A small thought to help you sleep when you next get your head down - a study shows the average pillow is home to a host of potentially-harmful fungi. A University of Manchester team found up to 16 types of fungi in pillows they analysed, the Allergy journal reported. Researchers said feather pillows had fewer species than synthetic versions, particularly in the case of a fungus which exacerbates asthma. Experts advise disinfecting pillows but say fungi occur in most environments. The researchers took samples from 10 pillows - five feather and five synthetic - which had been used for between 18 months and 20 years. The fungal spores found in the pillows fed off human skins scales and dust mite faeces. Fungal contamination of bedding was first uncovered by studies carried out in the 1930s, but few studies have been done since then. I think it is still advisable to disinfect pillows and buy feather ones to help reduce the exposure in the home Dr Geoffrey Scott, of the Fungal Research Trust Researchers found that all 10 pillows had a "substantial fungal load" with between four to 16 different species being identified on each, Allergy reported on its website. The microscopic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus was particularly evident in synthetic pillows. This fungus commonly invades the lungs and sinuses and can worsen asthma. It is also known to cause infection in leukaemia and bone marrow transplant patients. The team also found pillows which contained fungi as diverse as bread and vine moulds. Some also had fungi which would usually be found on damp walls. Lead researcher Professor Ashley Woodcock said the findings showed there was a "miniature ecosystem" operating inside pillows. Sleeping He added: "Since people spend a third of their life sleeping and breathing close to a potentially large and varied source of fungi, these findings certainly have important implications for patients with respiratory disease - especially asthma and sinusitis." Dr Geoffrey Scott, chairman of the Fungal Research Trust, which funded the study, said the findings were interesting. "I think particularly for asthma patients this is relevant. These fungi are found in the environment, so we are exposed to them everywhere. "But I think it is still advisable to disinfect pillows and buy feather ones to help reduce the exposure in the home." A spokesperson for the charity Asthma UK said: "We are aware that patients at the severe end of the spectrum of asthma are more likely to be hypersensitive to fungi than others with asthma. "If you think that fungi could be a trigger for you, you should consult your GP or asthma nurse for advice." 44 COSTCO! read this whole article...especially the end!

Today, WalMart announced it is starting a new policy in Tampa where all generic drugs will be sold for $4.00 per prescription.

COSTCO! read this... Let's hear it for Costco!! (This is just mind-boggling!) Make sure you read all the way past the list of the drugs. The woman that signed below is a Budget Analyst out of federal Wash ington , DC offices.

Did you ever wonder how much it costs a drug company for the active ingredient in prescription medications? Some people think it must cost a lot, since many drugs sell for more than $2.00 per tablet. We did a search of offshore chemical synthesizers that supply the active ingredients found in drugs approved by the FDA. As we have revealed in past issues of Life Extension, a significant percentage of drugs sold in the United States contain active ingredients made in other countries. In our independent investigation of how much profit drug companies really make, we obtained the actual price of active ingredients used in some of the most popular drugs sold in America

The data below speaks for itself.

Celebrex: 100 mg Consumer price (100 tablets): $130.27 Cost of general active ingredients: $ 0.60 Percent markup: 21,712%

Claritin: 1 0 mg Consumer Price (100 tablets): $215.17 Cost of general active ingredients: $0.71 Percent markup: 30,306% Keflex: 250 mg Consumer Price (100 tablets): $157.39 Cost of general active ingredients: $1.88 Percent markup: 8,372%

Since the cost of prescription drugs is so outrageous, I thought everyone should know about this. Please read the following and pass it on. It pays to shop around. This helps to solve the mystery as to why they can afford to put a Walgreen's on every corner

On Monday night, Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for Channel 7 News in Detroit , did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found in his investigation, that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as 3,000% or more. Yes, that's not a typo.....three thousand percent! So o ften, we blame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfully so.

But in this case, the fault clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription drug, and bought the name brand, you might pay $100 for 100 pills. The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80, making you think you are "saving" $20. What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills may have only cost him $10!

At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for the generic drugs. I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled.

Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea in chemo patients. I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60 pills at CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pills for $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could have got 150 at Costco for $28.08. I would like to mention, that although Costco is a "membership" type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in. (this is true) I went there this past Thursday and asked them.

I am asking each of you to please help me by copying this letter, and passing it into your own e-mail, and send it to everyone you know with an e-mail address.

45 Curry spice 'help for arthritis' Turmeric adds flavour and colour to curries and other foods Extract of a spice used in curry could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, US research suggests. Turmeric has been used for centuries in Asian medicine to treat inflammatory disorders and its extract can be found in western dietary supplements. Now lab work by University of Arizona researchers, in Arthritis & Rheumatism, shows just how the spice's curcuminoid extracts have a therapeutic effect. Experts say new drugs may be found, but eating more spices is unlikely to work. The researchers said clinical trials were needed before turmeric supplements could be recommended for medicinal use. Turmeric extract Earlier work by the University of Arizona team showed turmeric could prevent joint inflammation in rats. In their latest study, they set out to find exactly what ingredient in turmeric was having the anti-inflammatory effect. They prepared extracts from the rhizome, or root of the turmeric plant, and compared them against the commercially available products that contain turmeric extracts. Results of tests in animal models of arthritis are not always reproduced in human rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Ann Barton, Manchester University A version of turmeric extract that was free of essential oils was found to most closely match the composition of the commercial supplements. And it was this extract, containing curcumin, that was most effective at blocking the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in the rats. The extract appears to work by prevent a protein that controls when genes are switched on or off from being activated in the joint. Once the protein known as NF-KB is activated, it binds to genes and increases the production of inflammatory proteins, which attack the joints. Dr Janet Funk and her colleagues believe their findings also suggest turmeric extract could treat other inflammatory disorders, including asthma, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease. The extract also blocked a pathway in the body linked to bone loss, suggesting it could treat osteoporosis as well. Future work Professor Robert Moots, professor of rheumatology at Liverpool University and spokesman for the Arthritis Research Campaign, said people with arthritis will have to wait to see if the study results in new treatments. "It will come as no surprise if naturally occurring compounds have a drug-like effect," he said. "I do not think there is any evidence that countries that eat a lot of turmeric have a lower frequency of rheumatoid arthritis. So simply eating more spices is not likely to be effective clinically. "What is more likely is these results will lead to the targeted development of new compounds." Dr Anne Barton, senior lecturer and honorary consultant rheumatologist at the University of Manchester said: "The findings are interesting but should be interpreted with some caution at this stage. "Results of tests in animal models of arthritis are not always reproduced in human rheumatoid arthritis. "As the authors point out though, there are a number of successful drug therapies that have been developed from plants."

46 UK probes benefits of body scans Do scanners do more harm than good? The UK has said it will look at the benefits and risks of CT body scans, amid fears about the effects of exposing patients to radiation. The Department of Health has asked the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation to assess the subject. An increasing number of healthy people are using CT scans, which give an inside-out view of the body, as a way of detecting early signs of disease. However, some CT scans emit radiation beyond normal X-ray levels. CT scanning refers to a procedure that is also known as computerised or computed tomography, whereby a three-dimensional view of the body is constructed from a series of cross-sectional x-ray images. Fear factor A Department of Health (DoH) spokeswoman said that the government asked the committee "to look at the benefits and risks of using CT scanning in preventative healthcare". "DoH regulates medical exposures to ionising radiation, such as x-rays or CT scans, to ensure that the long-term benefits to the individual outweigh possible risks associated with radiation," she explained. The subject of body scanning in order to find early signs of disease has divided medical opinion, with some doctors saying it saves lives and others saying it is an expensive waste of money. Despite the controversy, more and more people are turning to health screening and body scanning as a way of checking up on their bodies, in the hope of catching illnesses such as cancer in the early stages. Health company Bupa, one of a number of firms that offers the tests, says it expects demand to keep increasing. In a report last year, the British Medical Association warned that scans could cause unnecessary anxiety.

47 Alzheimer mice memories restored The memory of mice suffering from Alzheimer's disease has been restored, a study shows. US scientists increased the activity of an enzyme called Uch-L1 which is involved in memory function. They then tested the mice and found that they had regained the ability to form new memories. Writing in the journal Cell, the team said the work was in its early stages, but could help the development of therapies for the debilitating disease. We injected the mice with this enzyme, and we found we were restoring their memories Dr Ottavio Arancio The scientists used transgenic mice that had Alzheimer's disease. Like humans with the condition, the mice had plaques of protein amyloid beta in their brain and damaged synapses (the site where brain cells communicate with each other), and they also suffered from memory loss. The researchers injected the mice with a substance which boosted levels of the enzyme Uch-L1. They then tested the mice's memory by putting them into a cage where they were exposed to a very mild shock from the cage floor. Mice with normal memories stay still when they are placed in the cage for a second time, to avoid the shock, whereas mice with Alzheimer's do not because they cannot remember their first visit. The researchers found that when they placed the mice with boosted Uch-L1 levels into the cage, they stayed still like the normal mice. Dr Ottavio Arancio, an author on the paper from Columbia University's Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and Aging, said: "We injected the mice with this enzyme, and we found we were restoring their memories." He said further investigation revealed the enzyme also seemed to repair the synapse function of the mice. Possible therapies Michael Shelanski, another author on the paper from Columbia University, said: "While amyloid beta is certainly a key player in Alzheimer's disease - and efforts to reduce it remain a worthy goal - our results show that, even in the presence of the plaque, damage to memory can be reversed." The authors propose that the enzyme could be targeted to look for new therapies for Alzheimer's disease; however they cautioned that the research is in its early stages. Dr Shelanski said: "While this discovery is very promising, its proven effectiveness is limited to animal models and it will take some time before it could lead to therapies in humans. "We continue to work towards that crucial goal." In an accompanying commentary, Peter Lansbury, a neurobiologist from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts, said: "Understanding the molecular mechanism of memory is one of the most compelling and complex challenges for the next generation of scientists. "[The researchers] identify a protein that may be involved in both normal memory function and the type of memory loss characteristic of early Alzheimer's disease." Harriet Millward, deputy chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "This is a very encouraging piece of research that could potentially open up a new front in the battle against Alzheimer's disease. "It is fair to say though, that at this stage a cure is still a long way off. More research is needed to see if this result could eventually be extrapolated from mice to men." 49 How to stop rosacea with an inexpensive supplement
Today, I've got great news for rosacea sufferers. We now know that a cheap mineral can reduce the symptoms of this irritating skin condition.

Rosacea is a dermatitis that affects people over the age of 50. It's characterized by redness, scaling and inflammation in the central part of the face. I've found that many cases of rosacea will clear simply by addressing a lack of stomach acidity. If you have little stomach acid, digestion in incomplete and skin problems can result. Simply taking digestive acid such as betaine hydrochloride may provide relief.

But a lack of stomach acid also leads to mineral deficiency, since acid is required to absorb minerals. Researchers proved this in a small (19 patients), but randomized and controlled study. They followed 11 women and eight men, who had suffered with the disease for an average of 4.4 years.

The researchers gave one group 100 mg of zinc sulfate three times daily for three months. Another group received a placebo. Then they gave the placebo group the zinc sulfate and the other group the placebo for the same amount of time. This crossover is the best way to conduct a study. The results showed that zinc indeed reduced activity. And not just a little bit - the effect was significant. And the activity began to rise when the researchers gave the placebo.

The only significant side effect of the zinc was mild gastric discomfort in 12% of the participants. Otherwise, each of the volunteers found significant relief from their rosacea symptoms when they took the zinc.

If you have rosacea, this is a safe, simple, and inexpensive way to treat it. Zinc is dirt cheap, especially as zinc sulfate. High doses of zinc can suppress copper absorption, so I would be sure to add copper (two mg per day).

Too much zinc also can cause other problems, such as a metallic, bitter taste in your mouth, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea mixed with blood. This would be quite rare at the doses used. But once you see improvement, it's still wise to cut the zinc to the lowest dose necessary to maintain improvement.

Also consider digestive acid as betaine hydrochloride, which might help with the absorption of all minerals.

The best way to remove deadly chemicals from your body

Toxins are everywhere. One of the most common is dioxin, which is one of the most insidious cancer-inducers we've found. This notorious chemical poisoned many of our GIs during the Vietnam War. I treated many of these GIs. And dioxin was particularly difficult to treat. You've got to unload the chemicals. These hydrocarbons melt into your fat. So they can be hard to get rid of. But I had a secret weapon that really helps with these difficult cases.

It's called chlorella. I've used this blue-green algae as a detoxifying agent for years. And there are times when it can work miracles. Now science if finally catching up.

A Japanese study on pregnant women found that taking chlorella while pregnant reduces the amount of dioxin in their breast milk by 30%. Breast milk is loaded with fat, so you would expect it to carry fat-soluble poisons as well. Many DDT-exposed women were scared to nurse their babies for the same reason.

While you may not be pregnant or nursing, this study has huge implications for you. All of us come into contact with thousands of man-made chemicals throughout our life. Some of these, such as dioxin, are deadly.

Chlorella is an easy way to remove any of these chemicals stored in your body. It's one of the few supplements I take regularly. I consider it more of a super food than a supplement. Not only does it detoxify, but it is chock full of essential nutrients, including all the essential amino acids and vitamin B12.

Sun Chlorella is an excellent choice and is readily available at most health food stores. The one I like best is E-Lyte Chlorella produced by rigid German organic standards. It's available at 800-896-1484.

If you'd like more information on chlorella, I'm planning to do a major report on it in a future issue of my newsletter Second Opinion. If you're not a subscriber, you can subscribe on my website www.secondopinionnewsletter.com

51 Cocoa Polyphenols Support Healthy Blood Sugar Levels According to New Study

Dietary Supplementation with Cacao (Cocoa) reduced blood glucose levels in obese diabetic mice, may support and promote Healthy Blood Sugar levels and offer other significant benefits for Humans, according to a new study from Japan.

"Dietary Supplementation with CLP (Cacao Proanthocyanidins) can dependently prevent the development of hyperglycemia in diabetic obese mice," wrote lead author Makoto Tomaru in the Journal of Nutrition. "The dietary intake of food or drinks produced from Cocoa Beans might be beneficial in preventing the onset of type -2 mellitus."

The potential health benefits of cocoa have been gaining increased interest, with studies reporting that flavonoid - rich Dark Chocolate may reduce the risk of Cardiovascular disease. However, according to Tomaru and co-workers, this is the first study to report that CLP (Cocoa) may prevent aggravation of type - 2 diabetes mellitus.

52 Beef diet 'damages sons' sperm'

Scientists have produced evidence to suggest that Europe was right to ban the beef industry from using growth promoters to increase yield.

A US study has linked use of the chemicals to damage to human sperm.

The University of Rochester found men whose mothers ate a lot of beef during pregnancy had lower sperm counts.

The Human Reproduction study found they were three times more likely to have a sperm count so low they could be classified as sub-fertile.

It confirms that Europe was justified to ban the use of these hormones when they did
Dr Allan Pacey
University of Sheffield

The use of growth promoting chemicals was banned in Europe in 1988.

But although the US banned the use of some growth promoters in 1979, others, such as the sex hormones testosterone and progesterone, are still in use in the beef industry.

The Rochester team examined sperm counts among US men born between 1949 and 1983.

They found those whose mothers ate more than seven beef meals a week had an average sperm concentration of 43.1 million sperm per millilitre of seminal fluid.

In contrast, the sons of mothers who ate less beef had an average of 56.9 million sperm.

Fertility threshold

GROWTH PROMOTERS

Six growth promoters are legally in use in the US:

Natural steroids:
estradiol
testosterone
progesterone

Synthetic hormones:
zeranol
trenbolene acetate
melengestrol acetate

Among sons of mothers who ate a lot of beef, 17.7% had a sperm concentration below the World Health Organization sub-fertility threshold of 20 million sperm per millilitre of seminal fluid. The figure for the sons of lower beef consumers was 5.7%.

Lead researcher Professor Shanna Swan said the findings suggested that exposure to growth promoters contained in the beef eaten by the boys' mothers was to blame.

However, she admitted the research team had no specific data on which chemicals the meat contained, and conceded other possible causes, such as exposure to pesticides, or lifestyle factors could not be ruled out.

She said: "Theoretically, the foetus and young children are particularly sensitive to exposure to sex steroids.

"Therefore, the consumption of residues of steroids in meat by pregnant women and young children is of particular concern."

Professor Swan said to pin down the role of growth promoters the study would have to be repeated in men born in Europe after 1988.

Damaging effects

EU POSITION

Hormonal growth promoters banned in EU in 1988

UK government runs a system of surveillance for residues of such substances in UK cattle to monitor compliance with the ban

EU law bans meat from hormonally treated animals being exported to the EU by non-member countries

Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said: "Even though males don't start producing sperm until puberty, it is during the time in their mother's womb, and in the early years of their life as an infant, that the testicles develop their capacity to produce sperm.

"Scientists have been concerned for a number of years that oestrogen mimicking chemicals in water supplies, plastics or make-up can affect the critical stages in the development of young boys' testicles.

"In extreme cases of exposure, this could lead to sperm counts in adult men that are low enough to be the cause of infertility

"That hormones given to cattle might have lowered the sperm counts of adult men because their mothers ate a lot of beef when they were pregnant with them is alarming to say the least.

"But it confirms that Europe was justified to ban the use of these hormones when they did."

Professor Alastair Hay, an expert on environmental toxicology at the University of Leeds, said one weakness of the study was that it relied on women being able accurately to recall how much beef they had eaten during pregnancy - something which may have happened many years earlier.

Heavy mobile use 'damages sperm'
Heavy use of mobile phones may damage men's fertility, a study has suggested.

Researchers found those men who used a phone for four hours or more a day had fewer sperm and those they had moved less well and were of poorer quality.

The Ohio study involving 364 men was presented to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in New Orleans.

But a UK expert said it was unlikely the phones were to blame, as they were in use and not near the testes, and it may be being sedentary was the cause.

If you are holding [the phone] up to your head to speak a lot, it makes no sense that it is having a direct effect on your testes
Dr Allan Pacey, British Fertility Society

The team from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio tested the sperm of 364 men who were being treated at fertility clinics in Mumbai, India, with their partners.

It was found that the heaviest users, those who used their phones for more than four hours a day had the lowest average sperm counts, at 50 million per millilitre (ml) and the least healthy sperm.

Men who used their phones for between two and four hours a day averaged sperm counts of 69 million per ml and had moderately healthy sperm.

Those who said they did not use mobile phones at all had the highest average sperm counts, of 86 million per ml, and their sperm was of the highest quality seen.

'Used without thinking twice'

Dr Ashok Agarwal, who led the research, told the New Orleans conference the study did not prove mobiles damaged fertility, but said it showed more research was warranted.

"There was a significant decrease in the most important measures of sperm health and that should definitely be reflected in a decrease in fertility, which is seen worldwide.

"People use mobile phones without thinking twice what the consequences might be.

"It is just like using a toothbrush, but mobiles could be having a devastating effect on fertility.

"It still has to be proved, but it could be having a huge impact because mobiles are so much part of lives."

He suggested radiation from mobile phones might harm sperm by damaging DNA, affecting the cells in the testes which produce testosterone or the tubes where sperm is produced.

But a British expert cast doubt on the suggested link between mobile phone use and infertility in the men studied.

Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said: "This is a good study, but I don't think it tackles the issue.

"If you're using your phone for four hours a day, presumably it is out of your pocket for longer.

"That raises a big question: how is it that testicular damage is supposed to occur?"

Dr Pacey, who is honorary secretary of the British Fertility Society, added: "If you are holding it up to your head to speak a lot, it makes no sense that it is having a direct effect on your testes."

He added that people who use phones for longer might be more sedentary, more stressed or eat more junk food, which might be more likely explanations for the link found in the study.

Low-fat dairy infertility warning
A diet rich on low-fat dairy food may make it harder for some women to conceive, according to a study involving thousands of US women.

Harvard researchers found women who frequently ate these foods were 85% more likely to have ovulation problems.

In contrast, the Human Reproduction study found eating full-fat dairy foods, including ice cream, cut the risk of this type of infertility.

However, UK experts insist there is scant evidence of a link.

The research used a database of 116,000 US nurses which is regularly updated with information about their lifestyle, diet and health.

I'm not convinced that there is any reason for women who are trying to conceive to alter their diet, unless they are obese
Dr Richard Fleming
Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine

They were asked whether they had been trying, and failing, to conceive, and whether a diagnosis of 'ovulatory failure' - infertility due to irregularity in the normal monthly cycle - had been made.

Over an eight year period between 1991 and 1999, 438 women reported this set of circumstances, and their answers to questions about their diet were analysed.

If the women ate two or more portions of low-fat dairy produce a week, the risk of infertility due to ovulatory failure appeared to be 85% higher.

When women eating two or more portions of full-fat dairy produce such as whole milk or ice cream were compared with those eating one or fewer, they had a 27% lower risk of infertility due to lack of ovulation.

Food swap

Dr Jorge Chavarro, who led the project, said that the link needed further investigation.

He said that women trying to conceive should think about their diet: "They should consider changing low-fat dairy foods for high-fat dairy foods; for instance, by swapping skimmed milk for whole milk and eating ice cream, not low fat yoghurt."

He believes the key may be that there is a substance vital for healthy ovarian function that requires the presence of fat for it to be properly absorbed into the body.

However, other scientists say that the only compelling evidence of a link between diet and infertility involves obesity, which is linked to a significant reduction in the chances of conception.

Dr Richard Fleming, from the Glasgow Centre for Human Reproduction, pointed out that women reporting a low-fat 'healthy' diet might be those already aware of fertility issues and trying to improve their chances.

He said: "Women with ovulatory failure make up a relatively small proportion of cases of female infertility.

"I'm not convinced that there is any reason for women who are trying to conceive to alter their diet unless they are obese, and I would not advise any woman to do this."

Overly Anxious And Driven People Prone To Irritable Bowel Syndrome

28 Feb 2007

Overly anxious and driven people are susceptible to irritable bowel syndrome, usually known as IBS, indicates research published ahead of print in the journal Gut.

The researchers studied 620 people who had confirmed gastroenteritis caused by a bacterial infection. None had had IBS before, or indeed any serious bowel disorder.

Each participant completed a detailed questionnaire when their infection was confirmed. This included questions about mood, perceived stress levels, perfectionism and illness beliefs and behaviours.

They were then monitored three and six months later to see whether they had developed the typical symptoms of IBS, which include diarrhoea and/or constipation, abdominal pain and bloating.

In all, 49 people had IBS at both time points. Women were more than twice as likely to have IBS as the men.

Those with IBS were significantly more likely to have reported high levels of stress and anxiety and psychosomatic symptoms than those who did not develop the condition

They were also significantly more likely to be "driven," carrying on regardless until they were forced to rest - a pattern of behaviour which only worsens and prolongs the condition, say the authors.

Although not likely to be depressed, those with IBS were more likely to take a pessimistic view of illness.

IBS affects between 10 and 15% of adults in industrialised countries, but its exact cause is unknown. "Gastroenteritis may trigger the symptoms, but cognitions, behaviour and emotions may help to prolong and maintain them over time," conclude the authors, who suggest that cognitive behavioural therapy may be an effective treatment.

The Dangers of Meat

A summary of the PBS special called:

"Modern Meat: A PBS Frontline Documentary"

Aired Thursday, April 18, at 9pm, 60 minutes

It's as American as apple pie and vastly more popular. The hamburger has become our national food: Americans eat more meat than any other people in the world, with the average person devouring three hamburgers a week. And with more meat available than ever before, today's beef costs 30 percent less than it did in 1970, making it that much more attractive to consumers looking for a quick, cheap meal.

Yet despite new federal safety regulations, more than 100 million pounds of meat has been recalled since 1998 due to suspected bacterial contamination. And just last summer, the nation's largest meat processor had to recall 500,000 pounds of beef contaminated with e.coli bacteria from seventeen states.

How much does the average American know about the beef they're eating? Have dramatic changes in the U.S. meat industry compromised the overall safety of American beef? And are the new federal regulations enough to guarantee the safety of the meat we eat?

FRONTLINE explores these and other questions in "Modern Meat," airing Thursday, April 18, at 9 P.M. on PBS. Through interviews with current and former U.S. Department of Agriculture officials, meat inspectors, food safety experts, and industry representatives, the one-hour documentary reveals how today's highly-industrialized meat business has fundamentally changed the composition of the typical American burger, causing some to fear the spread of serious -- and even deadly -- bacteria. The program also explores the powerful U.S. meat industry's attempts to resist certain government regulations aimed at preventing contaminated meat from ending up in supermarkets and fast food chains across America.

"I think what the [meat] industry is saying is that they don't want to be accountable for the product that they're selling," says Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, an expose of the meat and fast food industry. "This industry has fought against food safety inspection for a hundred years."

"Modern Meat" takes viewers inside the U.S. meat industry, beginning at the cattle ranch and then moving on to the "feedlot" -- a huge industrial holding pen where as many as 100,000 cattle are held together until they are fat enough to be slaughtered. Then the carcasses make their way down a Detroit-style assembly line or "dis-assembly line," as one industry insider quips -- where modern advances have enabled some meat companies to strip as many as 400 carcasses an hour -- nearly three times as many as in 1970.

But such modern efficiency may pose potential health risks.

In "Modern Meat," FRONTLINE speaks with numerous scientists and industry observers who raise serious concerns about today's meat production system. With large numbers of animals being raised together in huge feedlots covered with feces, they say, it's easy for bacteria to spread from one animal to another.

"Cows tend to produce feces [and] feces is primarily bacteria," says Glen Morris, a microbiologist at the University of Maryland and a former USDA official "When those bacteria are spread around, there's ample opportunity for bacteria to be spread from one cow to the next.

"In the larger feedlots," he adds, "there's a greater chance for the passage of microorganisms back and forth. All of that contributes to the spread of microorganisms like e. coli."

Dr. Robert Tauxe is also concerned. "The new highly industrialized way we produce meat has opened up new ecological homes for a number of bacteria," says Tauxe, head of the Centers for Disease Control's Foodborne Illness Section.

Gone are the days, Tauxe says, when a hamburger patty contained the meat from a single cow; with enormous numbers of cattle now being herded, fattened, slaughtered, and ground up together, it's virtually impossible to determine how many cows contribute to a single burger.

"If we take meat from a thousand different animals and grind that together," he says, "we're pooling bacteria from a thousand different animals as well."

What's more, there is increasing evidence that the modern meat industry's widespread use of antibiotics to promote growth and keep livestock healthy may result in the development of bacteria strains that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

The consequences of bacterial contamination can be deadly. In 1993, Jack in the Box hamburgers contaminated with a deadly strain of e. coli killed four children and injured 750, causing the government to seek a more scientific system for inspecting meat.

For decades, industry experts say, meat inspectors had practiced the "poke and sniff" method of visually inspecting carcasses for signs of disease. Following the Jack in the Box outbreak, the government proposed implementing a new inspection system -- known as "HACCP" (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) -- that would require microbial testing to detect the presence of invisible -- yet harmful -- bacteria such as e. coli and salmonella.

The proposed testing for salmonella, however, was not embraced by the meat industry. In "Modern Meat," FRONTLINE speaks with industry insiders and government officials who say the powerful U.S. food lobby -- which has contributed heavily to key Capitol Hill lawmakers -- aggressively fought including this testing as part of the new regulations.

It's a charge that the American Meat Institute's J. Patrick Boyle denies. "It's not the beef industry that's fighting standards that are meaningful, that improve the wholesomeness of the product," Boyle tells FRONTLINE. "The beef industry has reservations about unscientific standards that have no relation to the safety of our products."

The USDA resisted industry pressure, and in 1996 the U.S. meat industry began making the transition to the new inspection system. Since then, the USDA has reported a marked drop in salmonella contamination of ground beef, while the CDC has also begun to see a drop in some food borne illnesses. Yet the American consumer still faces serious risks.

Each year, the CDC tracks numerous cases of food poisoning, while the USDA maintains a running list of tainted meat recalls. The growth in global trade, meanwhile, has increased the risk of diseased cattle or beef coming into the country and decimating the U.S. livestock population. Last year, for example, USDA Inspector General Roger Viadero discovered that 650,000 pounds of foreign meat from a country embargoed because of foot and mouth disease found its way into America's heartland.

In addition, a recent court ruling threatens to limit the government's enforcement of its new food safety regulations. In "Modern Meat," FRONTLINE examines a lawsuit filed by Texas meat grinding company Supreme Beef against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. When the USDA effectively shut down the company after it failed bacterial contamination tests three times -- once after nearly 50 percent of its meat was found to be contaminated with salmonella -- the company sued. Supported in its lawsuit by the National Meat Association, Supreme Beef charged that the government didn't have the right to shut down its operations simply because it failed to meet the USDA salmonella standards. Last month, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the meat industry, prompting concern from some industry observers.

Carol Tucker Foreman, head of food safety at the Consumer Federation of America and a former USDA official, believes the modern meat production and distribution system leaves consumers vulnerable to a widespread outbreak of bacterial contamination. She points to a case in which sixteen deaths and five stillbirths were connected to Ball Park Franks found to be contaminated with deadly listeria.

"Those hot dogs were shipped everywhere," Foreman says. "And thousands and thousands of them were made every day. So the potential for one mistake rippling out and causing thousands of deaths is there."

57 Too much of this healthy fat increases your risk of cancer
I've told you in the past that eating the wrong fat can make prostate cancer grow twice as fast. But now there's evidence that reducing how much of this fat you eat now will lower your risk of ever getting the disease. And I've got an even easier way to help you reduce your risk, which I'll tell you about in just a moment.

First, an article published in the Journal of Urology has further linked prostate cancer to too many omega-6 fatty acids. The researchers conducted this study in Jamaica, a country with the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the world. The researchers biopsied the patients to prove cancer's presence. They then did a fatty acid analysis of their blood cells. The researchers found that all of the prostate cancer patients had way too many omega-6s in their blood.

Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for life. The trouble is, most of us get way too many. And here's one area where you can easily get way too much of a good thing. I've been to Jamaica. Most of the population eats a lot of fried foods - a primary source of omega-6 fatty acids.

The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in your diet is 4:1. Most people have at least 12:1. That's way too many omega-6s, which means most men have an increased risk of prostate cancer. No wonder the disease is becoming epidemic.

You really don't need a lot of oils in your diet. I like salad dressing as much as you do. So, when you do eat oil, make sure it's a high quality oil, such as olive oil or sesame oil (these are great for salads). There is NO place for common vegetable oils, such as Wesson or Canola oils, anywhere in your diet.

If you must cook with oil (cooking is the worst for oil), use coconut, macadamia nut, sesame, or olive oils, and keep the temperature as low as possible. I believe that you can get all the omega-3 you need from a diet rich in living foods. I would bet that the high rate of prostate cancer in Jamaica is not just omega-6, but an overall terrible deterioration in their diet.
I also recommend you take a high-quality omega-3 essential fatty acid supplement. I think Yes! EFA is on of the best on the market. You can order it by calling 800-728-2288.

58 Fat hormone 'boosts colon cancer'

A chemical produced by fat cells makes colon cancers grow faster, a US study has suggested.

The British Journal of Surgery study could help explain why severely overweight people appear to be at far greater risk of the disease.

A team at the University of California, San Diego found that the hormone leptin triggered increased growth in human colon cancer cells.

Obese people are up to three times more likely to develop colorectal cancer.

Other researchers have already found that some colon cancer cells appear to be set up to respond to leptin, with "receptors" for the chemical on their surfaces.

These results may explain why obesity increases a person's risk of colonic cancer
Dr Kim Barrett
University of California, San Diego

The more fat cells a person has, the more leptin will be in their bloodstream.

The San Diego team wanted to find further evidence of the link by watching what happened to human cancer cells exposed to the hormone.

In a laboratory, they added the hormone to different varieties of cancer cell.

Growth was stimulated in all the cell lines - and in two out of three tested, the hormone also hampered the usual process of programmed death that allows the body to replace normal cells, but which often malfunctions in cancers.

Dr Kim Barrett, who led the research, said: "These results may explain why obesity increases a person's risk of colonic cancer.

"The fact we have shown how leptin stimulates these cells means that drug companies may be in a better position to develop new treatments against the disease."

Obesity increasing

In the UK it is currently estimated that one in five men and a quarter of women are obese, with as many as 30,000 people a year dying prematurely from obesity-related conditions, including cancers.

Britain now has the most obese population in Europe.

A study published this week suggested that severely obese men doubled their risk of dying from prostate cancer, and obesity is also believed to increase the chance of developing breast cancer.

Body Mass Index

Underweight: less than 20

Normal weight: 20-25

Overweight: 25 - 29.9

Obese: over 30

Morbidly obese: over 40

Professor Alan Clarke said: "This research builds on previous work suggesting that leptin, a hormone released from fat cells, may play a role in the link between obesity and cancer.

"The researchers have shown that leptin is involved in two molecular pathways known to play a role in bowel cancer development."

"Although at an early stage, the findings shed light both on the development of bowel cancer and the link between obesity and cancer."

59 SWEET BUT POISON--Aspartame--stop using it!

SWEET BUT POISON - A MUST READ
In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick. she just knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughters name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of. She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19th I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS. I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment. I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda !!! I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.

My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk!!!! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home. Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind.

In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda... and literally dying a slow and miserable death. When she got to Florida March 22nd, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery. And she is walking!!! No wheelchair!!! This article saved her life.

If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on "ASPARTAME," marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.' In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant. I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is! Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas. In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear.
We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly. This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibro myalgia.

During a lecture, I said, "If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibro myalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss.you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!" People were jumping up during the lecture saying, "I have some of these symptoms."Is it reversible?"

Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it!!!

This is a serious problem. Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence! Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight! These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve "tissue specimens" Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!!!

Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the "diet products" and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.

Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance. Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various
levels of brain damage, seizures, depression, manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage.

Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called "behavior modification prescription drugs" (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being "poisoned" on a daily basis with the very foods that were "better for them than sugar."

It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.

Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners. There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances due to the use of NutraSweet.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy to convince people that Aspartame is to blame for their child's illness.

Stevia, which is a sweet herb, NOT A MANUFACTURED ADDITIVE, helps in the metabolism of sugar, which would be ideal for diabetics. It has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. It is known that for many years the FDA outlawed this true sweet food," due to their loyalty to MONSANTO Chemical Company."

Books on this subject are available:
EXCITOTOXINS: THE TASTE THAT KILLS written by Dr. Russell Blayblock
(Health Press 1-800-643-2665) AND: DEFENSE AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE-

written by DR H. J. Roberts, also a diabetic specialist.

These two doctors will soon be posting a position paper with case histories on the deadly effects of Aspartame on the Internet. According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, "We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison."

Herein lies the problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning it's use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings and still, nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED!!

There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a piece of the Aspartame pie." I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians? This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.

Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants. The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms. The bill was killed.
It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this,
letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're informed now!!!! YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!!!!

The Mass Poisoning
Of Humanity

An Exploration Of Human Stupidity
By Mike Adams

The mass poisoning of humanity: an exploration of human stupidity As human beings, we're the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves. As part of modern living, we create a wide variety of chemical toxins that go into the ecosystem through rivers and streams, the air, the soil and so on. Not only that, we actually synthesize toxic chemicals and then inject them directly into the food supply -- knowing full well that they are poisonous and are major contributors to the epidemic rates of chronic disease we are experiencing today.
What are these chemicals I'm talking about? Well, you're about to get a whirlwind tour of humanity's toxic chemicals. And if you look at toxic chemicals, you have to start in the realm of dentistry, because in no other profession (save medicine) will you find the use of so many toxic chemicals that are deliberately prescribed to patients or injected into their bodies. We're talking about, of course, mercury fillings and fluoride dripped into the public water supplies.
Dr. Poison Mercury, DDS
When we talk about mercury fillings, you have to keep in mind that mercury is simply one of the most toxic substances you can put into the human body, aside from radioactive substances. Right now, today, dentists all across the country and around the world are taking this highly toxic metal and literally putting it into the teeth of human beings. Those teeth are then used to chew food, and as a person chews; they effectively grind away the surfaces of these mercury fillings. These fillings release gas mercury vapor and mercury particles, which people then breathe into their lungs, or digest in their stomachs.
Now, I can understand that maybe 50 years ago, the dental industry was too ignorant to realize that it was advocating this toxic metal and putting it into patients' mouths. The industrial revolution is full of examples of companies that used lots of toxic substances and therapies, thinking they were good for you. Recall the X-rays and radiation of the first half of the twentieth century, people thought that radiation was great for you. Manufacturers were equating radiation with energy and thinking that if you consumed radiation pills, you would be more energetic. These were actually sold and sponsored by p hysicians and doctors, it was a mainstay of the medical industry in those days.
Later, we had the lead issue with industrial companies like DuPont, which has an interesting history in the manufacture and distribution of lead. People were convinced lead was great for everything. They put it into the gasoline, and leaded gasoline was born. We later found out that lead causes nervous system disorders and that it's very unhealthy to have lead emissions in the air. We ended up getting rid of lead paint, and banning the use of lead in foods and cosmetics.
But for some reason, today dentists still think mercury is perfectly good for you. It's like they're living in the Dark Ages. Gee, why don't they have you swallow radiation pills at the same time they're putting mercury fillings in your mouth? That way you can be energized and have fillings, too!
Some of the greatest quackery in the world right now takes place in dentists' offices; and dentists strongly deny the problems associated with mercury toxicity and mercury fillings. Of course, I don't mean all dentists, some dentists are slowly coming around to this issue. In fact, these selected dentists are leading the change; they are pioneering dentists, just as those in the world of medicine that are trying to change conventional medicine.
These few dentists that are trying to make changes and get mercury fillings banned deserve tremendous credit for taking the lead and standing up and fighting against the dogma of their own industry to protect their patients. There's no doubt in my mind that within a few years, mercury fillings will be banned and they will join the ranks of lead paint, asbestos insulation, leaded gasoline and radiation pills. They will go into the historical annals of bad medicine, and some day future generations will think we were absolutely crazy to be putting mercury in people's mouths.
More Poison From Dentists - Fluoride
That's not the end of the toxicity in the world of dentistry, we also h ave dentists pushing for, get this, the dripping of a highly toxic chemical waste product into the water supply... a substance that's scraped off the smokestacks of industrial polluters. They want every person in the community to actually drink this substance.
This material is a toxic waste that's regulated by the EPA. It would be illegal to drip it into a river or a stream, but for some reason, it is perfectly legal to drip it into the public water supply and let people drink it. It's a bizarre cycle of rationalization that can only be called medical lunacy. They no longer consider this toxic substance toxic if it passes through the bodies of human beings first. What substance am I talking about? Fluorosilicic acid, otherwise known by its short name, fluoride.
Across the country and around the world, dentists are insisting that we drip fluoride into the public water supply. For what purpose? To protect the teeth? Can you be serious? People are swallowing this liquid. They're not rinsing it in their mouth and spitting it out, they're ingesting it. Now as a result we have fluorosis, and bone disorders that are related to the over-consumption of fluoride.
For some reason, dentists have decided that they now have medical degrees, and that they want to medicate the entire population with a drug, a biologically active drug, without first diagnosing any individual in that community. In other words, they want to medicate everyone across the board with the exact same dosage, regardless of that person's individual health needs, and regardless of how much other fluoride they may be exposed to on a regular basis. This is the insanity of the modern dentistry community. Remember, these are the same people that want to put mercury in your mouth, so it only makes sense that they also want to poison your entire body by putting fluorosilicic acid into the water supply.
They don't call it fluorosilicic acid of course, because that might scare people. They call it fluoride -- and in fact they will even deceive the public and call it "naturally-occurring fluoride." There's nothing natural about fluorosilicic acid.
If you go to any community water supply where they are dripping so called "fluoride" into the water system, you will find out where they actually get the fluoride -- ask them, "Hey, do you dig this out of the ground in natural fluoride deposits?," and they will tell you "No, we buy it from an industrial waste processing company because it's cheaper than fluoride out of the ground." I've asked this question myself of people who are in charge of dripping fluoride into the public water supply, and that's exactly what they have told me. You can verify this yourself and find out just how your local community is poisoning you and your family with this highly toxic waste chemical.
How To Poison The Entire Population
Again, we are the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves. And we do it in highly efficient ways. If you want to poison a population, there's no easier way than to drip a substance into the water supply. And if you really want to make sure everyone is poisoned, you would pass laws that mandate the dripping of this poison into the water supply (i.e. fluoridation laws). That would ensure that everybody gets some, whether it's an infant, an adult or a senior citizen. This is increasingly what is happening across the United States and around the world.
There's absolutely no good science behind any of the fluoride arguments. Even if they were using genuine natural fluoride, there are no studies that show the ingestion of fluoride decreases the incidence of dental caries in modern society. Yet this myth persists in the dental community, and the American Dental Association stands firmly behind this national poisoning agenda. They will call anybody who disagrees with it a "nut," and they will say that every population must be fluoridated -- for their own good, of course. That's the only way to ensure they have healthy teeth, the logic goes.
Put More Chemicals In Our Food, Please
If you wanted to poison the entire population, but you were worried that not everyone drinks from the water supply, there is another way: just poison the food supply. This, too, is happening today, with food manufacturing practices and the FDA looking the other way on toxic food ingredients.
Our population is being poisoned with artificial chemical sweeteners. Let's take a look at these. Aspartame is a sweetener that was never proven safe; in fact, the original safety recommendation panel at the FDA recommended that aspartame be denied approval as a safe food ingredient. It was none other than Donald Rumsfeld at the time who helped push aspartame through the FDA to get it legalized as a food additive.
Today, we now see the vast majority of complaints of food side effects sent to the FDA being caused by aspartame. Aspartame is an excitotoxin, that is, a neurotoxic chemical, and it breaks down in your body into both formic acid and formaldehyde. Now, would you like to go out and drink some formaldehyde? Well, you might do that if you were a biological specimen that needed to be preserved for dissection, but if you're a normal, healthy, sane human being, you'd never drink formaldehyde. Unless, of course, they put it in an artificial sweetener compound and added it to cans of your favorite carbonated soft drink, in which case Americans will gladly drink formaldehyde in can after can, poisoning their nervous systems, going half blind, experiencing epilepsy and increasing the onset of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
Again, we're the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves with these chemicals. And yet we have entire groups, food lobbies and public apologizers who run around saying that these ingredients are perfectly good for you. There's nothing wrong with drinking formaldehyde and formic acid. You'll be fine! Drink more! Here, in fact here's a 50 percent more coupon, so you can buy even more!
Want Some Chlorine In Your Food Today?
Some say, "Well, aspartame is on the way out -- the big sweetener now is Sucralose or Splenda." This is the artificial sweetener that claims to be made from sugar. Well, I suppose you can claim that it starts out as sugar, but it's made by removing some of the atoms from sugar and replacing them with atoms of chlorine, which is of course one of the chemical elements used during the atrocities of World War II to create poison gas, the same element used in chlorine to disinfect pools and public water supplies.
When it's put that way, you might start thinking, "Well, gee, maybe there's something wrong with this sugar, maybe I shouldn't be putting chlorine atoms into my body." Would you go out and drink chlorine? If you know anybody who works on pools, or who has a pool maintenance business, they will tell you that chlorine gas will kill you. In fact, just to handle chlorine, they have to wear protective rubber gloves and protective respiration devices, because if they get chlorine powder wet and touch it or inhale it, they are in for a world of hurt. Chlorine gas can cause serious injury or even death. In fact, if you just take household ingredients like chlorine bleach and mix it with ammonia, you will create a highly toxic gas that will literally kill you, which is why these products often contain warnings that they should not be mixed.
And yet, in our food supply, we take chlorine atoms and we attach them to molecules that used to be sugar, and we call that a safe sweetener. And now we're putting it into all kinds of foods, whether it's soft drinks, muffins, pancake mixes and pretty much everything in the low-carb arena. I'm not sure people realize that they are actually ingesting chlorine atoms. Maybe they're too dazed from the fluoride.
Okay, so far we have dentists putting mercury fillings in your mouth that give off mercury vapor and cause neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. We have the same insane dentists mandating the dripping of EPA-regulated environmental pollutants into the public water supply, making sure that human beings in the United States have to drink toxic waste product... after which it enters into the rivers and streams as part of human waste, even though if such chemicals were dripped directly into the rivers and streams in this country it would be a violation of federal law. We have food and beverage companies using artificial chemical sweeteners to replace sugar and claiming that their products are healthier than sugar products. And yet, these artificial chemical sweeteners break down into dangerous chemical components such as formaldehyde and formic acid, or they are made with chlorine atoms that simply do not belong in the human body. These chemicals do not appear anywhere in nature attached to a sugar molecule.
Yummy Poison: Hydrogenated Oils
So, what else can the money-hungry corporations think of to put into the food or the water to poison America? They are quite creative and they have a lot of poisons at their disposal. The next terrible poison on the list is hydrogenated oils. They're called brain poisons, and they're present in perhaps half of all the foods found at every grocery store. It's listed right on the label -- you can see it as hydrogenated oil" or "partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil".
This artificial fat directly causes cardiovascular heart disease, it destroys normal cardiovascular health, it destroys the healthy functioning of the nervous system, it causes brain disorders, it causes heart attacks -- it is one of the most prominent and yet toxic ingredients put into the food supply. It also causes birth defects and essential fatty acid deficiencies in both the mother and her fetus.
And it's put in foods on purpose, for the convenience of the food manufacturers. Hydrogenated oils don't go bad, which means they save money for the food manufacturing companies, because their foods don't go bad on the shelves. And how do you make hydrogenated oils? Well, you don't find them anywhere in nature -- you have to have a chemical processing facility to make hydrogenated oils. And you do it by bubbling hydrogen gas through liquid soybean oil or other types of oils, using a catalyst (in most cases the catalyst is nickel). So with this nickel and the bubbling of hydrogen gas, you get extra hydrogen atoms attached to the molecules in oil, which makes them solid at room temperature. Since they are solid at room temperature, they can be more easily used to make margarine products, or used in crackers and cookies. And all of this, again, is for the convenience of the food manufacturing companies.
Food manufactures don't care what happens to your health, their job is just to sell food products. If you have a health problem as a result, that's your problem, not theirs. You won't find food companies offering to pay for your medical bills if you have a heart attack from eating hydrogenated oils. They are basically passing the buck and demanding that you pay for the health consequences caused by their foods. In fact, they're working hard to pass legislation that would outlaw lawsuits against food companies!
Pepperoni-Shaped Poison
Not to be outdone, the meat processing companies in this country also want to make sure they get lots of poison into your food products. It's not enough to just sell you red meat, which is by itself an extremely unhealthy food ingredient that promotes colon cancer, heart disease, obesity and many other disorders, they also have to put cancer-causing chemicals in various meat products.
This makes sure that you get colon cancer from the additives, if not from the red meat itself. This additive is called sodium nitrite, and you'll find it in virtually every packaged meat product found at the grocery store, whether it's pepperoni, breakfast sausage, or bacon. You can buy sliced ham, sliced chicken, deli slices, lunch meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, the meat that goes into soups, the meat that goes into those little lunch trays ... pretty much any form of packaged meat at the grocery store has this toxic ingredient in it. That's why the daily consumption of processed meats has now been clinically shown to produce a 6,700% increase in the risk of pancreatic cancer!
Guinea Pig People
And what is this ingredient again? Sodium nitrite! When you ingest sodium nitrite, it mixes with the digestive juices of your stomach and creates a class of chemical compounds called nitrosamines. These nitrosamines are potent cancer-causing chemicals. In fact, as I've mentioned before, they are so potent that lab researchers actually inject mice with nitrosamines when they want to give those mice breast cancer or other form of cancer they can study. And yet, as humans, we put sodium nitrite (see related ebook on sodium nitrite) right into the food supply. It's almost as if we were treating the entire population as lab rats -- and in fact that's not far from the truth.
Drugs are frequently released in this country on an experimental basis, using the population as guinea pigs to find out how many people might die from that drug in order to get more safety data. Let's face it, when the FDA approves drugs for public use, they are not at all proven safe. The American public is routinely treated as a collection of guinea pigs in order to promote prescription drugs, foods, artificial sweeteners or other elements.
Toxic Personal Care Products
So now we've got toxic chemicals in our mouths, in our public water supplies, and in our foods and beverages. Where else can money hungry corporations put toxic chemicals into our immediate environment and get them into our bodies? Well, think hard and you might come up with some other ideas. Let's look at the personal care products industry, because practically every brand name shampoo, cologne, perfume, deodorant, antiperspirant or other personal care product on the market is made with toxic fragrance chemicals. These can contain solvents, carcinogens and compounds that are registered in government databases as having strong liver toxicity.
The reason these ingredients are allowed in these products are because the FDA has mistakenly assumed for many, many years that whatever you put on your body doesn't get absorbed into your body. They think, for example, that you could just coat your body with toxic chemicals and you would be fine, because your skin is a barrier. I've even heard pharmacists tell me that the skin is a great barrier, so whatever you put on your skin won't go into your body.
That's utterly ridiculous! As pharmacists, haven't these people ever sold nicotine patches? How do you think those work? They work by releasing nicotine that gets absorbed directly through your skin into your bloodstream. If your skin didn't absorb nicotine, the nicotine patches wouldn't deliver a dosage. You have to be half-crazy to think that the skin is some kind of permanent barrier that keeps out everything you put on it.
In fact, the skin is very porous -- the skin breathes. Yes, it keeps out bacteria, but it sure doesn't keep out chemical solvents, and it doesn't keep out molecules as big as nicotine. Nicotine molecules are not very small, by the way. There are many things that go right through your skin, and those include fragrance chemicals, solvents, and a lot of other toxic ingredients that are found in personal care products. One such ingredient called MIT was recently discovered in most brand-name shampoos, and this MIT ingredient is known to cause brain cancer.
Voluntary Chemical Suicide
So now we are really stupid as a species, because we've poisoned our mouths, our water supply, our food, our beverages and even our shampoos and personal care products. And if you use dryer sheets, then you've got your clothes poisoned as well, they're coated in a layer of toxic chemicals found in dryer sheet products. So what else could we use to poison the population? There are still many other options.
One way would be to sell a toxic chemical that people voluntarily put into their mouths because another person in a position of authority told them to do so. This is describing the prescription drug industry, where people are poisoning themselves each and every day with toxic painkiller drugs like COX-2 inhibitors or toxic anti-cholesterol drugs like statin drugs. People are poisoning their minds with antidepressant drugs that promote violent behavior and suicides. They're poisoning their cardiovascular system with beta-blockers and other drugs. And of course they're poisoning their livers.
And yet people volunteer to do this -- each and every day they will put these toxic chemicals into their bodies simply because someone with a degree from a school of disease (also known as medical school) told them to do so. And, not only that, they will actually pay for the privilege of poisoning their own bodies.
They'll pay good money too, not just a few hundred dollars a month, but several thousand dollars a month. Some people will spend six figures a year poisoning their bodies because their doctor told them to do so. And, then when something goes wrong and they have a small tumor show up on a mammogram, or some other blood test comes back positive that indicates they may have some sort of cancer tumor, they will gladly pay another $100,000 or more in order to destroy their entire immune system with a treatment known as chemotherapy.
They will literally sit there and let other doctors inject highly toxic poisons directly into the bloodstream and allow them to circulate through their body. How toxic is this stuff? Well, gee, think about it, your hair falls out, you get sick and you vomit -- are these signs that maybe this stuff doesn't belong in your body? I don't know about you, but I think that's a very strange way to heal someone.
If I were a medical professional and I were healing someone, and I had them do something which made their hair fall out and they started vomiting and it looked like they were going to melt away right before my very eyes, I would think that, hey, maybe this isn't good for them.
But that's not what conventional oncologists think. They think, oh, this is great stuff. Look, we're going to destroy the cancer tumor and, if we're lucky, there may even be a patient left by the time we're done. And if not -- that's alright, as long as they pay the bill.
Official, Government-Approved Drug Dealers
We as a species actually have a class of professionals, highly-paid professionals, who we give the right to poison us with toxic chemicals. These people are called doctors. I call them drug dealers. Just like illegal drugs, their drugs kill people. The main difference is that these "legal" drugs enrich politically influential corporations, whereas illegal drugs enrich drug lords. Our national "War on Drugs" is quite selective in its targets, don't you think? Industrial hemp is outlawed, but doping up millions of children on powerful narcotics is perfectly legal: it's called Ritalin.
So, remember, we're the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves. And if we don't do it in just one or two ways, we do it in half a dozen different ways! Then we regulate that poisoning, we make it federal law! And we have lobbyists and groups out there defending this use of poison in the food supply, and defending the use of it in cosmetic products and personal care products. We have defenders of the drug industry, people who say, "Yeah, well there was a study five years ago that showed a 1200 percent heart attack increase, but we thought that really wasn't relevant to this drug and we decided to go ahead and market that drug anyway." That's what we have today. And the real details of this gruesome story have only begun to be uncovered. Wait until the rest of the story comes out...
We're #1!
Is it any wonder, with all of the poisoning going on at all the different levels in our bodies, that we are now the most chronically diseased population that has ever been recorded in the history of civilization? It's true -- there is no population that has suffered from diseases like we do in America today. You would have to be clinically insane to not think that there's a correlation between the poison we are putting into our bodies and the diseases we are getting as a result.
Plus, as recent studies have shown, we're the #1 nation in the world in terms of mental disorders as well! Let's see: #1 in obesity, #1 in diabetes, #1 in cancer, #1 mental disorders, and we have the HIGHEST health care costs in the world, too. We have the most expensive drugs in the world. We have more doctors and health care professionals per capita than any country in the world. And, frighteningly, we're the country with the most nukes. Great idea, huh? Put the nuclear weapons under control of the most mentally disturbed population in the world... now if only our leaders were at least sane...
But no, wait a minute -- the doctors are right, all diseases are just genetic. None of these poisons matter, it's just your genes. They say the gene pool of the human race was perfectly fine 100 years ago when people didn't have all these diseases, but it has somehow mutated to a gene pool that gives you heart disease and cancer and osteoporosis and diabetes, and, by the way, there's nothing you can do about it. That's what they want you to believe, because then they take away your power. Then you have no ability to make changes.
Actually, We're Pretty Darned Clever, Aren't We?
Not only are we the most stupid species on the planet, because we're poisoning ourselves, we are simultaneously the cleverest species, because we find ways to justify all that poisoning. We find scientific gobbledygook to claim that, yes, NutraSweet is good for you! Or that these chlorine atoms attached to sugar are great for you, or that mercury in your mouth somehow doesn't have a toxic effect on your body. Or that hydrogenated oils are perfectly fine for your heart health.
We stupidly say if you take those and you drink this weight loss shake made with sugar, you'll be healthy. And if you have this barbaric surgical procedure called gastric bypass surgery, you'll no longer be obese. And if you're not healthy, don't worry; we have magic bullet prescription drugs that will make you even healthier. So we're a clever population at the same time that we're incredibly stupid. Do you know what that's called? That's called being a population of great technicians and lousy healers. And that's exactly what we are today.
Having used the word "stupid" throughout this editorial, I use it deliberately. I don't mean it in the way that a teenager might say, "My stupid little brother flipped me off." I mean it in a more precise way, in the way defined by Dictionary.com:
Stupid:
1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse. 2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes. 3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake. 4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
Can you think of a better word to describe the people around here?
As Einstein once said, "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

MSG - Slowly
Poisoning America

Author Unknown
5-1-4
I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years working for the government.
He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies.
No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with a chemical when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become obese They even have a title for the race of fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats" .
MSG?
I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the fridge.
MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many different names in order to fool those who catch on.
But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant, even the sit down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!
So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or a vitamin?
Not according to my friend John. In the book he wrote, an expose of the food additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of America, (www.spofamerica.com ), he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.
Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG at http://www.msgfacts.com/facts/msgfact12.html explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more. A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?
'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned!
And we wonder why the nation is overweight? The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.
Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!
Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the prepackaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.
The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount.
How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like these?

Yes, that last study was not a typo, it WAS written in 1978. Both the medical research community and food "manufaturers" have known MSG's side effects for decades!
Many more studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes,
Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's.
But what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see?
Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters are pushing a Bill through Congress. Called the "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act" also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill", this sweeping law bans anyone from suing food manufacturers, sellers and distributors. Even if it comes out that they purposely added an addictive chemical to their foods. Read about it for yourself at: http://www.yahoo.com.http://story.news.yahoo.com/news? tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040311/ap_on_go_co/obesity_lawsuits_4
The Bill has already been rushed through the House of Representatives, and is due for the same rubber stamp at Senate level. It is important that Bush and his corporate supporters get it through before the media lets everyone know about MSG, the intentional Nicotine for food.
Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the Government office, the official told him "Sure I know how bad MSG is, I wouldn't touch the stuff!" But this top level government official refused to tell the public what he knew.
The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin.
So what do we do?
The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it.
Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive food additive.
But what can I do about it? I'm just one voice, what can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while guys like Bush are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us.
I for one am doing something about it.
I am sending this email out to everyone I know in an attempt to show you the truth that the corporate owned politicians and media won't tell you.
The best way you can help save yourself and your children from this drug-induced epidemic, is to forward this email to everyone. With any luck, it will circle the globe before Bush can pass the Bill protecting those who poisoned us.
The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on Nicotine?
Blow the whistle on MSG.
If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for us, and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. Go to the National Library of Medicine, at www.pubmed.com
http://www.pubmed.com . Type in the words "MSG Obese", and read a few of the 115 medical studies that appear.
We do not want to be rats in one giant experiment, and we do not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, addicted sheep, waiting for the slaughter.
With your help we can put an end to this, and stop the Slow Poisoning of America. Let's save our children

62 Hidden Sources Of MSG In Foods
From the book 'Excitotoxins - The Taste That Kills'
By Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD
3-6-3 What if someone were to tell you that a chemical (MSG) added to food could cause brain damage in your children, and that this chemical could effect how your children's nervous systems formed during development so that in later years they may have learning or emotional difficulties? What if there was scientific evidence that these chemicals could permanently damage a critical part of the brain known to control hormones so that later in life your child might have endocrine problems? How would you feel?

Suppose evidence was presented to you strongly suggesting that the artificial sweetener in your diet soft drink may cause brain tumors to develop, and that the number of brain tumors reported since the introduction of this widespread introduction of this artificial sweetener has risen dramatically? Would that affect your decision to drink these products and especially to allow your children to drink them? What if you could be shown overwhelming evidence that one of the main ingredients in this sweetener (aspartate) could cause the same brain lesions as MSG? Would that affect your buying decisions? And finally, what if it could be demonstrated that all of these types of chemicals, called excitotoxins, could possibly aggravate or even precipitate many of today's epidemic neurodegenerative brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease? Would you be concerned if you knew that these excitotoxin food additives are a particular risk if you have diabetes, or have ever had a stroke, brain injury, brain tumor, seizure, or have suffered from hypertension, meningitis, or viral encephalitis?

Would you also be upset to learn that many of the brain lesions caused by these products in your children are irreversible and can result from a SINGLE exposure of these products in sufficient concentration?

How would you feel when you learn the food industry hides and disguises these excitotoxin additives (MSG and Aspartate) so they can't be recognized? Incredulous? Enraged? The fact is many foods are labeled as having "No MSG" but in fact not only contain MSG but also are laced with other excitotoxins of equal potency and danger.

All of the above are true. And all of these well known brain toxins are poured into our food and drink by the thousands of tons to boost sales. These additives have NO OTHER purpose other than to enhance to TASTE of food and the SWEETNESS of various diet products. Hidden Sources Of MSG As discussed previously, the glutamate (MSG) manufacturers and the processed food industries are always on a quest to disguise the MSG added to food. Below is a partial list of the most common names for disguised MSG. Remember also that the powerful excitotoxins, aspartate and L-cystine, are frequently added to foods and according to FDA rules require NO LABELING AT ALL. * Food Additives that ALWAYS contain MSG * Monosodium Glutamate Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein Hydrolyzed Protein

Hydrolyzed Plant Protein
Plant Protein Extract
Sodium Caseinate
Calcium Caseinate
Yeast Extract
Textured Protein (Including TVP)
Autolyzed Yeast
Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
Corn Oil

* Food Additives That FREQUENTLY Contain MSG *
Malt Extract
Malt Flavoring
Bouillon
Broth
Stock
Flavoring
Natural Flavors/Flavoring
Natural Beef Or Chicken Flavoring
Seasoning
Spices
* Food Additives That MAY Contain MSG Or Excitotoxins *
Carrageenan
Enzymes
Soy Protein Concentrate
Soy Protein Isolate
Whey Protein Concentrate
Also: Protease Enzymes of various sources can release excitotoxin amino acids from food proteins
Aspartame - An Intense Source Of Excitotoxins
Aspartame is a sweetener made from two amino acids, phenylalanine and the excitotoxin aspartate. It should be avoided at all costs. Aspartame complaints accounts for approximately 70% of ALL complaints to the FDA. It is implicated in everything from blindness to headaches to convulsions. Sold under dozens of brand names such as NutraSweet and Equal, aspartame breaks down within 20 minutes at room temperature into several primary toxic and dangerous ingredients:
1. DKP (diketopiperazine) (When ingested, converts to a near duplicate of
a powerful brain tumor causing agent)
2. Formic Acid (ant venom)
3. Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
4. Methanol (causes blindness...extremely dangerous substance)

Common Examples:
Diet soft drinks, sugar free gums, sugar free Kool Aid, Crystal Light, childrens' medications, and thousands of other products claiming to be 'low calorie', 'diet', or 'sugar free'.
A Final Note...
Dr. Blaylock recounted a meeting with a senior executive in the food additive industry who told him point blank that these excitotoxins are going to be in our food no matter how many name changes are necessary...

63 Better Omega 3 To Omega 6 Ratio Could Reduce Depression And Boost Mood According To A New Study

Improving the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 Essential Oils in the Diet may improve mood and reduce depression, suggests a new study.

Researchers from Ohio State University compared markers for inflammation, and found that people with high ratios of Omega 6 to Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids were more likely to suffer depression and inflammatory diseases.

"Our findings highlight ways in which diet may enhance or inhibit depression-related inflammation among older adults," wrote lead author Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, in the Journal Psychosomatic Medicine. "These behavior-dietary-immune interactions have important implications for both mental and physical health."

The new study adds to the growing body of evidence linking an increased Omega 3 to Omega 6 intake ratio to improved health.

64 Selenium pills 'may combat HIV'
Taking daily selenium supplements may block the build up of HIV in a patient's blood, research suggests.
The University of Miami found a lower HIV viral load in patients who took selenium supplements for nine months.

Selenium deficiencies have been recorded in HIV patients, and evidence suggests the mineral can improve the function of the immune system.

The Archives of Internal Medicine study suggests the supplements may be a cheap and easy way to help keep HIV in check.

This research suggests that selenium supplements may be useful in addition to traditional combination therapy
Roger Pebody
Terrence Higgins Trust

Advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) have given HIV patients a longer life expectancy.

However, strict adherence to the therapy is required to keep HIV viral counts low, and there is a risk of side effects.

Therefore, scientists have been searching for alternative treatments to keep HIV under control.

More immune cells

Over nine months, the University of Miami team gave 91 HIV patients a daily capsule containing 200 micrograms of high-selenium yeast, and another 83 patients a daily placebo capsule.

The two groups had similar selenium levels at the beginning of the study, but after nine months levels were higher in the group taking the capsules containing the mineral.

Those with higher selenium levels in their blood were more likely to have a lower HIV viral load, and higher numbers of CD4 cells, which play a key role in fighting off infection.

The researchers said the exact mechanism by which selenium exerts its effects on HIV is not known.

One hypothesis is that selenium's antioxidant properties may repair damage done to immune cells by oxygen, which is produced at higher levels in the bodies of patients with HIV.

Writing in the journal, the researchers said: "Given the challenges of using conventional pharmacotherapy to achieve and maintain virologic suppression in HIV-spectrum disease, our results support the use of selenium as a simple, inexpensive and safe adjunct therapy."

Roger Pebody, of the HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust, said: "We have known for some time that selenium plays a role in the immune system, but previous studies before combination therapy didn't show that these supplements have an impact on HIV.

"This research is more encouraging and suggests that selenium supplements may be useful in addition to traditional combination therapy.

"However, we wouldn't advise that people with HIV should rush out and buy these supplements immediately.

"Decisions on the value of taking supplements should always be made in consultation with your doctor."

Yusef Azad, director of the National Aids Trust, described the research as valuable.

"However, in interpreting this new report, it must be remembered that antiretroviral therapy is the only currently effective treatment for HIV.

"Selenium may have a supportive role alongside antiretroviral therapy but it cannot be a treatment in itself. "

65 Med diet 'cuts lung disease risk'
Eating a Mediterranean diet halves the risk of serious lung disease like emphysema and bronchitis, a study says.
Grouped under the umbrella term chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), they are expected to become the world's third leading cause of death by 2020.

French researchers tracked almost 43,000 men for 12 years.

The Thorax study suggests the key could be that the Mediterranean diet is rich in anti-oxidants, which reduce the risk of tissue inflammation.

Alternatively, lower levels of sugar and nitrates in the diet - both of which have been linked to impaired lung function - may play a role.

People in the Mediterranean eat lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and fish.

A more standard Western diet tends to include higher levels of processed foods, refined sugars, and cured and red meats.

The researchers, from the French research institute Inserm, found that a Mediterranean diet was associated with a 50% lower risk of developing COPD than the Western diet - even after taking factors such as smoking and age into account.

And men who ate a predominantly Western diet were more than four times as likely to develop COPD.

Other benefits

The study showed that the higher the compliance with a Mediterranean diet, the lower the risk of developing COPD over the 12-year period.

Conversely, the higher the compliance with the Western diet, the higher was the risk of developing COPD.

Last month, an international study reported that a Mediterranean diet helped prevent the development of asthma and respiratory allergies in children.

And last year, US researchers found that eating a Mediterranean diet could reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's.

Dr Keith Prowse, chairman of the British Lung Foundation, said: "COPD is a hugely disabling illness and we welcome the findings of this large study which provide an interesting insight into a possible link between diet and the disease.

"COPD is the only major cause of death whose incidence is on the increase in the UK and we urgently need more research into all aspects of the disease so that health services can prevent and treat it more effectively."

Mammograms cause breast cancer (and other cancer facts you probably never knew)

by Dawn Prate

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among American women between the ages of 44 and 55. Dr. Gofinan, in his book, Preventing Breast Cancer, cites this startling statistic along with an in-depth look at mammographic screening, an early-detection practice that agencies like the American Cancer Society recommend to women of all age groups. According to most health experts, catching a tumor in its early stages increases a woman's chances of survival by at least 17 percent.

The most common method for early detection is mammography. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of your breast that can reveal tumor growths otherwise undetectable in a physical exam. Like all x-rays, mammograms use doses of ionizing radiation to create this image. Radiologists then analyze the image for any abnormal growths. Despite continuous improvements and innovations, mammography has garnered a sizable opposition in the medical community because of an error rate that is still high and the amount of harmful radiation used in the procedure.

Effectiveness of Mammography

Is mammography an effective tool for detecting tumors? Some critics say no. In a Swedish study of 60,000 women, 70 percent of the mammographically detected tumors weren't tumors at all. These "false positives" aren't just financial and emotional strains, they may also lead to many unnecessary and invasive biopsies. In fact, 70 to 80 percent of all positive mammograms do not, upon biopsy, show any presence of cancer.

At the same time, mammograms also have a high rate of missed tumors, or "false negatives." Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, in his book, The Politics Of Cancer, claims that in women ages 40 to 49, one in four instances of cancer is missed at each mammography. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) puts the false negative rate even higher at 40 percent among women ages 40-49. National Institutes of Health spokespeople also admit that mammograms miss 10 percent of malignant tumors in women over 50. Researchers have found that breast tissue is denser among younger women, making it difficult to detect tumors. For this reason, false negatives are twice as likely to occur in premenopausal mammograms.

Radiation Risks

Many critics of mammography cite the hazardous health effects of radiation. In 1976, the controversy over radiation and mammography reached a saturation point. At that time mammographic technology delivered five to 10 rads (radiation-absorbed doses) per screening, as compared to 1 rad in current screening methods. In women between the ages of 35 and 50, each rad of exposure increased the risk of breast cancer by one percent, according to Dr. Frank Rauscher, then-director of the NCI.

According to Russell L. Blaylock, MD, one estimate is that annual radiological breast exams increase the risk of breast cancer by two percent a year. So over 10 years the risk will have increased 20 percent. In the 1960s and 70s, women, even those who received 10 screenings a year, were never told the risk they faced from exposure. In the midst of the 1976 radiation debate, Kodak, a major manufacturer of mammography film, took out full-page ads in scientific journals entitled About breast cancer and X-rays: A hopeful message from industry on a sober topic.

Despite better technology and decreased doses of radiation, scientists still claim mammography is a substantial risk. Dr. John W. Gofman, an authority on the health effects of ionizing radiation, estimates that 75 percent of breast cancer could be prevented by avoiding or minimizing exposure to the ionizing radiation. This includes mammography, x-rays and other medical and dental sources.

Since mammographic screening was introduced, the incidence of a form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased by 328 percent. Two hundred percent of this increase is allegedly due to mammography. In addition to harmful radiation, mammography may also help spread existing cancer cells due to the considerable pressure placed on the woman's breast during the procedure. According to some health practitioners, this compression could cause existing cancer cells to metastasize from the breast tissue.

Cancer research has also found a gene, called oncogene AC, that is extremely sensitive to even small doses of radiation. A significant percentage of women in the United States have this gene, which could increase their risk of mammography-induced cancer. They estimate that 10,000 A-T carriers will die of breast cancer this year due to mammography.

The risk of radiation is apparently higher among younger women. The NCI released evidence that, among women under 35, mammography could cause 75 cases of breast cancer for every 15 it identifies. Another Canadian study found a 52 percent increase in breast cancer mortality in young women given annual mammograms. Dr. Samuel Epstein also claims that pregnant women exposed to radiation could endanger their fetus. He advises against mammography during pregnancy because "the future risks of leukemia to your unborn child, not to mention birth defects, are just not worth it." Similarly, studies reveal that children exposed to radiation are more likely to develop breast cancer as adults.

Navigating the Statistics

While the number of deaths caused by breast cancer has decreased, the incidence of breast cancer is still rising. Since 1940, the incidence of breast cancer has risen by one to two percent every year. Between 1973 and 1991, the incidence of breast cancer in females over 65 rose nearly 40 percent in the United States.

Some researchers attribute this increase to better detection technologies; i.e., as the number of women screened for breast cancer rises, so does the number of reported cases. Other analysts say the correlation between mammographic screening and increases in breast cancer is much more ominous, suggesting radiation exposure is responsible for the growing number of cases. While the matter is still being debated, Professor Sandra Steingraber offers ways to navigate these statistics. According to Steingraber, the rise in breast cancer predates the introduction of mammograms as a common diagnostic tool. In addition, the groups of women in whom breast cancer incidence is ascending most swiftly – blacks and the elderly – are also least likely to get regular mammograms.

The majority of health experts agree that the risk of breast cancer for women under 35 is not high enough to warrant the risk of radiation exposure. Similarly, the risk of breast cancer to women over 55 justifies the risk of mammograms. The statistics about mammography and women between the ages of 40 and 55 are the most contentious. A 1992 Canadian National Breast Cancer Study showed that mammography had no positive effect on mortality for women between the ages of 40 and 50. In fact, the study seemed to suggest that women in that age group are more likely to die of breast cancer when screened regularly.

Burton Goldberg, in his book, Alternative Medicine, recommends that women under 50 avoid screening mammograms, although the American Cancer Society encourages mammograms every two years for women ages 40 to 49. Trying to settle this debate, a 1997 consensus panel appointed by the NIH ruled that there was no evidence that mammograms for this age group save lives; they may even do more harm than good. The panel advises women to weigh the risks with their doctors and decide for themselves.

New Screening Technologies

While screening is an important step in fighting breast cancer, many researchers are looking for alternatives to mammography. Burton Goldberg totes the safety and accuracy of new thermography technologies. Able to detect cancers at a minute physical stage of development, thermography does not use x-rays, nor is there any compression of the breast. Also important, new thermography technologies do not lose effectiveness with dense breast tissue, decreasing the chances of false-negative results.

Some doctors are now offering digital mammograms. Digital mammography is a mammography system in which x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electric signals. Though radiation is still used, digital mammography requires a much smaller dose. The electrical signals are used to produce images that can be electronically manipulated; a physician can zoom in, magnify and optimize different parts of breast tissue without having to take an additional image.

The experts speak on mammograms and breast cancer:

Regular mammography of younger women increases their cancer risks. Analysis of controlled trials over the last decade has shown consistent increases in breast cancer mortality within a few years of commencing screening. This confirms evidence of the high sensitivity of the premenopausal breast, and on cumulative carcinogenic effects of radiation.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 539

In his book, "Preventing Breast Cancer," Dr. Gofinan says that breast cancer is the leading cause of death among American women between the ages of forty-four and fifty-five. Because breast tissue is highly radiation-sensitive, mammograms can cause cancer. The danger can be heightened by a woman's genetic makeup, preexisting benign breast disease, artificial menopause, obesity, and hormonal imbalance.
Death By Medicine by Gary Null PhD, page 23

"The risk of radiation-induced breast cancer has long been a concern to mammographers and has driven the efforts to minimize radiation dose per examination," the panel explained. "Radiation can cause breast cancer in women, and the risk is proportional to dose. The younger the woman at the time of exposure, the greater her lifetime risk for breast cancer.
Under The Influence Modern Medicine by Terry A Rondberg DC, page 122

Furthermore, there is clear evidence that the breast, particularly in premenopausal women, is highly sensitive to radiation, with estimates of increased risk of breast cancer of up to 1% for every rad (radiation absorbed dose) unit of X-ray exposure. This projects up to a 20% increased cancer risk for a woman who, in the 1970s, received 10 annual mammograms of an average two rads each. In spite of this, up to 40% of women over 40 have had mammograms since the mid-1960s, some annually and some with exposures of 5 to 10 rads in a single screening from older, high-dose equipment.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 537

No less questionable—or controversial—has been the use of X rays to detect breast cancer: mammography. The American Cancer Society initially promoted the procedure as a safe and simple way to detect breast tumors early and thus allow women to undergo mastectomies before their cancers had metastasized.
The Cancer Industry by Ralph W Moss, page 23

The American Cancer Society, together with the American College of Radiologists, has insisted on pursuing largescale mammography screening programs for breast cancer, including its use in younger women, even though the NCI and other experts are now agreed that these are likely to cause more cancers than could possibly be detected.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 291

A number of "cancer societies" argued, saying the tests — which cost between $50-200 each - - are a necessity for all women over 40, despite the fact that radiation from yearly mammograms during ages 40-49 has been estimated to cause one additional breast cancer death per 10,000 women.
Under The Influence Modern Medicine by Terry A Rondberg DC, page 21

Mammograms Add to Cancer Risk—mammography exposes the breast to damaging ionizing radiation. John W. Gofman, M.D., Ph.D., an authority on the health effects of ionizing radiation, spent 30 years studying the effects of low-dose radiation on humans. He estimates that 75% of breast cancer could be prevented by avoiding or minimizing exposure to the ionizing radiation from mammography, X rays, and other medical sources. Other research has shown that, since mammographic screening was introduced in 1983, the incidence of a form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which represents 12% of all breast cancer cases, has increased by 328%, and 200% of this increase is due to the use of mammography.69 In addition to exposing a woman to harmful radiation, the mammography procedure may help spread an existing mass of cancer cells. During a mammogram, considerable pressure must be placed on the woman's breast, as the breast is squeezed between two flat plastic surfaces. According to some health practitioners, this compression could cause existing cancer cells to metastasize from the breast tissue.
Alternative Medicine by Burton Goldberg, page 588

In fact the benefits of annual screening to women age 40 to 50, who are now being aggressively recruited, are at best controversial. In this age group, one in four cancers is missed at each mammography. Over a decade of pre-menopausal screening, as many as three in 10 women will be mistakenly diagnosed with breast cancer. Moreover, international studies have shown that routine premenopausal mammography is associated with increased breast cancer death rates at older ages. Factors involved include: the high sensitivity of the premenopausal breast to the cumulative carcinogenic effects of mammographic X-radiation; the still higher sensitivity to radiation of women who carry the A-T gene; and the danger that forceful and often painful compression of the breast during mammography may rupture small blood vessels and encourage distant spread of undetected cancers.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 540

Since a mammogram is basically an x-ray (radiation) of the breast, I do not recommend mammograms to my patients for two reasons: 1) Few radiologists are able to read mammogams correctly, therefore limiting their effectiveness. Even the man who developed this technique stated on national television that only about six radiologists in the United States could read them correctly. 2) In addition, each time the breasts are exposed to an x-ray, the risk of breast cancer increases by 2 percent.
The Hope of Living Cancer Free by Francisco Contreras MD, page 104

Mammography itself is radiation: an X-ray picture of the breast to detect a potential tumor. Each woman must weigh for herself the risks and benefits of mammography. As with most carcinogens, there is a latency period or delay between the time of irradiation and the occurrence of breast cancer. This delay can vary up to decades for different people. Response to radiation is especially dramatic in children. Women who received X-rays of the breast area as children have shown increased rates of breast cancer as adults. The first increase is reflected in women younger than thirty-five, who have early onset breast cancer. But for this exposed group, flourishing breast cancer rates continue for another forty years or longer.
Eat To Beat Cancer by J Robert Hatherill, page 132

The use of women as guinea pigs is familiar. There is revealing consistency between the tamoxifen trial and the 1970s trial by the NCI and American Cancer Society involving high-dose mammography of some 300,000 women. Not only is there little evidence of effectiveness of mammography in premeno-pausal women, despite NCI's assurances no warnings were given of the known high risks of breast cancer from the excessive X-ray doses then used. There has been no investigation of the incidence of breast cancer in these high-risk women. Of related concern is the NCI's continuing insistence on premeno-pausal mammography, in spite of contrary warnings by the American College of Physicians and the Canadian Breast Cancer Task Force and in spite of persisting questions about hazards even at current low-dose exposures. These problems are compounded by the NCI's failure to explore safe alternatives, especially transillumination with infrared light scanning.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 544

High Rate of False Positives—mammography's high rate of false-positive test results wastes money and creates unnecessary emotional trauma. A Swedish study of 60,000 women, aged 40-64, who were screened for breast cancer revealed that of the 726 actually referred to oncologists for treatment, 70% were found to be cancer free. According to The Lancet, of the 5% of mammograms that suggest further testing, up to 93% are false positives. The Lancet report further noted that because the great majority of positive screenings are false positives, these inaccurate results lead to many unnecessary biopsies and other invasive surgical procedures. In fact, 70% to 80% of all positive mammograms do not, on biopsy, show any presence of cancer.71 According to some estimates, 90% of these "callbacks" result from unclear readings due to dense overlying breast tissue.72
Alternative Medicine by Burton Goldberg, page 588

"Radiation-related breast cancers occur at least 10 years after exposure," continued the panel. "Radiation from yearly mammograms during ages 40-49 has been estimated to cause one additional breast cancer death per 10,000 women."
Under The Influence Modern Medicine by Terry A Rondberg DC, page 122

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is a high rate of missed tumors in women ages 40-49 which results in 40% false negative test results. Breast tissue in younger women is denser, which makes it more difficult to detect tumours, so tumours grow more quickly in younger women, and tumours may develop between screenings. Because there is no reduction in mortality from breast cancer as a direct result of early mammogram, it is recommended that women under fifty avoid screening mammograms although the American Cancer Society still recommends a mammogram every two years for women age 40-49. Dr. Love states, "We know that mammography works and will be a lifesaving tool for at least 30%."
Treating Cancer With Herbs by Michael Tierra ND, page 467

Equivocal mammogram results lead to unnecessary surgery, and the accuracy rate of mammograms is poor. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in women ages 40-49, there is a high rate of "missed tumors," resulting in 40% false-negative mammogram results. Breast tissue in younger women is denser, which makes it more difficult to detect tumors, and tumors grow more quickly in younger women, so cancer may develop between screenings.
Alternative Medicine by Burton Goldberg, page 973

Even worse, spokespeople for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) admit that mammograms miss 25 percent of malignant tumors in women in their 40s (and 10 percent in older women). In fact, one Australian study found that more than half of the breast cancers in younger women are not detectable by mammograms.
Underground Cures by Health Sciences Institute, page 42

Whatever you may be told, refuse routine mammograms to detect early breast cancer, especially if you are premenopausal. The X-rays may actually increase your chances of getting cancer. If you are older, and there are strong reasons to suspect that you may have breast cancer, the risks may be worthwhile. Very few circumstances, if any, should persuade you to have X-rays taken if you are pregnant. The future risks of leukaemia to your unborn child, not to mention birth defects, are just not worth it.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 305

Other medical research has shown that the incidence of a form of breast cancer known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which accounts for 12% of all breast cancer cases, increased by 328% — and 200% of this increase is due to the use of mammography!
Under The Influence Modern Medicine by Terry A Rondberg DC, page 123

As the controversy heated up in 1976, it was revealed that the hundreds of thousands of women enrolled in the program were never told the risk they faced from the procedure (ibid.). Young women faced the greatest danger. In the thirty-five- to fifty-year-old age group, each mammogram increased the subject's chance of contracting breast cancer by 1 percent, according to Dr. Frank Rauscher, then director of the National Cancer Institute (New York Times, August 23, 1976).
The Cancer Industry by Ralph W Moss, page 24

Because there is no reduction in mortality from breast cancer as a direct result of early mammograms, it is recommended that women under 50 avoid screening mammograms, although the American Cancer Society is still recommending a mammogram every two years for women ages 40-49. The NCI recommends that, after age 35, women perform monthly breast self-exams. For women over 50, many doctors still advocate mammograms. However, breast self-exams and safer, more accurate technologies such as thermography should be strongly considered as options to mammography.

In the midst of the debate, Kodak took out full-page ads in scientific journals entitled "About breast cancer and X-rays: A hopeful message from industry on a sober topic" (see Science, July 2, 1976). Kodak is a major manufacturer of mammography film.

The largest and most credible study ever done to evaluate the impact of routine mammography on survival has concluded that routine mammograms do significantly reduce deaths from breast cancer. Scientists in the United States, Sweden, Britain, and Taiwan compared the number of deaths from breast cancer diagnosed in the 20 years before mammogram screening became available with the number in the 20 years after its introduction. The research was based on the histories and treatment of 210,000 Swedish women ages 20 to 69. The researchers found that death from breast cancer dropped 44 percent in women who had routine mammography. Among those who refused mammograms during this time period there was only a 16 percent reduction in death from this disease (presumably the decrease was due to better treatment of the malignancy).
Dr Isadore Rosenfeld's Breakthrough Health By Isadore Rosenfeld MD, page 47

In 1993—seventeen years after the first pilot study—the biochemist Mary Wolff and her colleagues conducted the first carefully designed, major study on this issue. They analyzed DDE and PCB levels in the stored blood specimens of 14,290 New York City women who had attended a mammography screening clinic. Within six months, fifty-eight of these women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Wolff matched each of these fifty-eight women to control subjects—women without cancer but of the same age, same menstrual status, and so on—who had also visited the clinic. The blood samples of the women with breast cancer were then compared to their cancer-free counterparts.
Living Downstream by Sandra Steingraber PhD, page 12

One reason may be that mammograms actually increase mortality. In fact numerous studies to date have shown that among the under-50s, more women die from breast cancer among screened groups than among those not given mammograms. The results of the Canadian National Breast Cancer Screening Trial published in 1993, after a screen of 50,000 women between 40-49, showed that more tumors were detected in the screened group, but not only were no lives saved but 36 percent more women died from
The Cancer Handbook by Lynne McTaggart, page 57

One Canadian study found a 52 percent increase in breast cancer mortality in young women given annual mammograms, a procedure whose stated purpose is to prevent cancer. Despite evidence of the link between cancer and radiation exposure to women from mammography, the American Cancer Society has promoted the practice without reservation. Five radiologists have served as ACS presidents.53
When Healing Becomes A Crime by Kenny Ausubel, page 233

Premenopausal women carrying the A-T gene, about 1.5 percent of women, are more radiation sensitive and at higher cancer risk from mammography. It has been estimated that up to 10,000 breast cancer cases each year are due to mammography of A-T carriers.
The Politics Of Cancer by Samuel S Epstein MD, page 539

A study reported that mammography combined with physical exams found 3,500 cancers, 42 percent of which could not be detected by physical exam. However, 31 percent of the tumors were noninfiltrating cancer. Since the course of breast cancer is long, the time difference in cancer detected through mammography may not be a benefit in terms of survival.
Woman's Encyclopedia Of Natural Healing by Dr Gary Null, page 86

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also has called for more mammograms among women over 50. However, constant screening still can miss breast cancer. mammograms are at their poorest in detecting breast cancer when the woman is under 50.
The Cancer Handbook by Lynne McTaggart, page 53

Despite its shortcomings, every woman between the ages of fifty and sixty-nine should have one every year. I also recommend them annually for women over seventy, even though early detection isn't as important for the slow-growing form of breast cancer they tend to get. One mammogram should probably be taken at age forty to establish a baseline, but how often women should have them after that is debatable. Some authorities favor annual screening. Others feel there's not enough evidence to support screening at all before fifty. Still others believe that every two years is sufficient. I lean toward having individual women and their doctors go over the pros and cons and make their own decisions. Finally, a mammogram is appropriate at any age if a lump has been detected.
The Longevity Code By Zorba Paster MD, page 234 For breast cancer, thermography offers a very early warning system, often able to pinpoint a cancer process five years before it would be detectable by mammography. Most breast tumors have been growing slowly for up to 20 years before they are found by typical diagnostic techniques. Thermography can detect cancers when they are at a minute physical stage of development, when it is still relatively easy to halt and reverse the progression of the cancer. No rays of any kind enter the patient's body; there is no pain or compressing of the breasts as in a mammogram. While mammography tends to lose effectiveness with dense breast tissue, thermography is not dependent upon tissue densities.

67 Aspirin 'prevents bowel cancer'
Taking aspirin each day can prevent bowel cancer developing, a study says.
Oxford University researchers said taking a dose of 300mg a day for five years offered the protection.

Long-term aspirin use is generally not backed because of the risk of stomach problems, but the team said it could benefit those at high-risk of cancer.

Cancer campaigners welcomed the study - published in the Lancet - which examined data from previous research covering more than 7,500 people.

These findings are not an indication that the general population should rush out and take what is a high dosage of aspirin on a daily basis.
Rob Glynne-Jones
Bowel Cancer UK

Each year, around 35,000 men and women in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer, and more than 16,000 die from the disease.

The researchers looked at the results from two large-scale UK trials carried out in the late 1970s and early 1980s covering over 7,500 people which had given some people 300, 500 or 1,200mg per day doses of aspirin or a dummy pill for five to seven years.

The people in the study were then followed for up to 20 years, and deaths from bowel cancer were logged.

The team say it takes at least 10 years to see an effect, because that is how long it takes for a pre-cancerous growths to develop into cancer.

Other studies have examined aspirin's benefits.

However, this was the first where people were allocated to take different doses of the drug, or the fake version, rather than looking back at the aspirin use of bowel cancer patients and comparing them with healthy people.

High risk group 'benefit'

The researchers found that taking 300mg of aspirin - the equivalent of one pill - a day for five years reduced the incidence of bowel cancer by 74% in the subsequent 10 to 15 years.

An accompanying review of 30 observational studies suggested taking medium-to-high doses of aspirin for 10 years or more reduced the risk of developing the disease by 50%-70%.

The protective effect of aspirin appeared to be consistent regardless of age, sex, race or country of origin.

It was also seen in individuals who had a close family relative with bowel cancer, which normally raises the lifetime risk two to four times.

Professor Peter Rothwell, who led the research, said: "What we are saying is that for a subgroup of people at high risk of bowel cancer, they probably aren't going to be dramatically harmed by taking aspirin.

"They may have some risk of bleeding in the stomach, but they will see potentially significant benefits in the reduction of their colon cancer risk.

"In that situation, I think taking aspirin daily would be worthwhile."

Warning

Dr Andrew Chan, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, writing in the Lancet, said the findings were "convincing evidence" that aspirin can reduce the incidence of bowel cancer.

But he added: "With the concerns about the potential risks of long-term aspirin use and the availability of alternative prevention strategies - such as screening - these findings are not sufficient to warrant a recommendation for the general population to use aspirin for cancer prevention."

Rob Glynne-Jones, chief medical advisor to the charity Bowel Cancer UK, said: "This is very interesting and it certainly confirms what we already know and believe about the links between aspirin, polyps and the development of bowel cancer.

"However, these findings are not an indication that the general population should rush out and take what is a high dosage of aspirin on a daily basis.

"Aspirin at this dose over a prolonged period of time could lead to potentially serious side effects in a few people."

Hot water kills dust mites

Posted on May 28, 2007 7:06:00 AM

Washing your laundry in hot water - 140 degrees Fahrenheit - completely eliminates allergy-aggravating dust mites (image left), according to new research. Don't like the added expense of using hot water? Well, you could do a double-rinse of cold water and get pretty good results. The study was conducted by South Korean researchers, who presented their data at a recent meeting of the American Thoracic Society.

69 Court Begins Hearings on Vaccine Link to Autism
Monday , June 11, 2007

The parents of 12-year-old Michelle Cedillo asked a federal court Monday to find that their child's autism was caused by common childhood vaccines, a precedent-setting case that could pave the way for thousands of autistic children to receive compensation from a government fund set up to help people injured by the shots.

Wearing noise-canceling headphones, Michelle, of Yuma, Ariz., was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair at the start of the proceedings before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. She stayed only a short time.

Her parents, Theresa and Michael Cedillo, allege a preservative called thimerosal that had been used in vaccines weakened their daughter's immune system and prevented her body from clearing the measles virus after she was immunized for the disease at age 15 months.

Today, Michelle suffers from a litany of health problems, including severe autism, inflammatory bowel disease, glaucoma and epilepsy.

"We hope to find out what happened and hopefully get the help she needs," said Theresa Cedillo, who takes care of her daughter full time at home.

Special Master George Hastings Jr. thanked the family for allowing theirs to be the first of nine test cases that will help guide the resolution of some of the nearly 5,000 similar claims lodged with the government.

"Clearly the story of Michelle's life is a tragic one," Hastings said in pledging to listen carefully to the evidence presented during the three-week hearing.

The burden of proof is easier than in a traditional court. Plaintiffs only have to prove that a link between autism and the shots is more likely than not, based on a preponderance of evidence.

Large scientific studies have found no association between autism and vaccines containing thimerosal.

But many parents say their children's symptoms did not show up until after their children received the vaccines, required by many states for admission to school.

"These are families who followed the rules. These are families who brought children in for vaccines. These are families who immunized their children," said the Cedillos' attorney, Thomas Powers.

Powers said that the science regarding a possible vaccine-autism link is in dispute.

Government attorney Vincent Matanoski dismissed much of what the plaintiffs are expected to present as conjecture or speculation.

"You'll find their hypotheses untested or, when tested, have been found false," Matanoski said.

Since 1999, more than 4,800 families have filed claims with the government alleging their children developed autism as a result of routine vaccinations. Most contend that a preservative called thimerosal is to blame for the impaired social interaction typical of the disorder.

The court is being asked to decide whether there is a link between autism and childhood vaccines. If it finds one exists, the families could be eligible for compensation under the Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund, a program established by Congress to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines by safeguarding manufacturers from lawsuits. Under the program, people injured by vaccines receive compensation through a special trust fund.

Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction. Those affected often have trouble communicating, and they exhibit unusual or severely limited activities and interests. Classic symptoms of mercury poisoning include anxiety, fatigue and abnormal irritation, as well as cognitive and motor dysfunction.

Monday's case addresses the theory that the cause of autism is the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine in combination with other vaccines containing thimerosal. The preservative, about 50 percent mercury by weight, is no longer found in routine childhood vaccines but is used in some flu shots.

In July 1999, the U.S. government asked vaccine manufacturers to eliminate or reduce, as expeditiously as possible, the mercury content of their vaccines to avoid any possibility of infants who receive vaccines being exposed to more mercury than is recommended by federal guidelines.

CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion.

When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation, while destroying cancer cells, also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Stevia is the best, natural sweetner. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.

About 20% can be from cooked food including beans.

Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties.

Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements, like vitamin E, are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well.

Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.

Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.
He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. Best not to use microwave at all, causes radiation damage.

This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper.

It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper.

The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.

Cover food with a paper towel instead.

71 Caution: Some soft drinks may seriously harm your health
Expert links additive to cell damage

By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent
Published: 27 May 2007
A new health scare erupted over soft drinks last night amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

The problem - more usually associated with ageing and alcohol abuse - can eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's.

The findings could have serious consequences for the hundreds of millions of people worldwide who consume fizzy drinks. They will also intensify the controversy about food additives, which have been linked to hyperactivity in children.

Concerns centre on the safety of E211, known as sodium benzoate, a preservative used for decades by the £74bn global carbonated drinks industry. Sodium benzoate derives from benzoic acid. It occurs naturally in berries, but is used in large quantities to prevent mould in soft drinks such as Sprite, Oasis and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Sodium benzoate has already been the subject of concern about cancer because when mixed with the additive vitamin C in soft drinks, it causes benzene, a carcinogenic substance. A Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks last year found high levels in four brands which were removed from sale.

Now, an expert in ageing at Sheffield University, who has been working on sodium benzoate since publishing a research paper in 1999, has decided to speak out about another danger. Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory. What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging an important area of DNA in the "power station" of cells known as the mitochondria.

He told The Independent on Sunday: "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether.

"The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it - as happens in a number if diseased states - then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously. And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage to this DNA - Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of ageing."

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) backs the use of sodium benzoate in the UK and it has been approved by the European Union but last night, MPs called for it to investigate urgently.

Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat chair of Parliament's all-party environment group said: "Many additives are relatively new and their long-term impact cannot be certain. This preservative clearly needs to be investigated further by the FSA."

A review of sodium benzoate by the World Health Organisation in 2000 concluded that it was safe, but it noted that the available science supporting its safety was "limited".

Professor Piper, whose work has been funded by a government research council, said tests conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration were out of date.

"The food industry will say these compounds have been tested and they are complete safe," he said. "By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate. Like all things, safety testing moves forward and you can conduct a much more rigorous safety test than you could 50 years ago."

He advised parents to think carefully about buying drinks with preservatives until the quantities in products were proved safe by new tests. "My concern is for children who are drinking large amounts," he said.

Coca-Cola and Britvic's Pepsi Max and Diet Pepsi all contain sodium benzoate. Their makers and the British Soft Drinks Association said they entrusted the safety of additives to the Government.

72 Report: Soda May Seriously Harm Your Health
Sunday , May 27, 2007

You may want to put that soda can down.

A common preservative found in drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Fanta and Diet Pepsi and may cause serious cell damage, according to a report in Britain's The Independent.

Sodium benzoate has the ability to switch off vital parts of a person's DNA, according to research from a British university.

The problem is usually associated with aging and alcohol abuse, but new findings show that drinking soda with the preservative can eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's.

Sodium benzoate, which derives from benzoic acid, has been used for years by the carbonated drinks industry to prevent mold from developing in soft drinks. The ingredient has been the subject of concern on cancer, because when mixed with Vitamin C, it turns into a carcinogenic substance called benzene, the Independent reported.

Last year, a Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks found high levels in four brands that were removed from store shelves.

73 Feeling lethargic, moody, tired, fat? It could be your thyroid
POSTED: 10:16 a.m. EDT, May 10, 2007
By Melanie Haiken
Health.com

Most people say they're tired when they skip their morning run or nod off during their favorite 9 o'clock sitcom. But if you want to know about real bone-crunching fatigue, the kind that chains you to your bed, ask someone with a thyroid disorder.

For me, the exhaustion was totally out of character. I'd always been high-energy, even a tad hyper. Six hours of sleep a night was enough. Then last fall I became a different person, someone I didn't like very much at all.

I'd get up at 7:15 and see my 13-year-old out the door, then lie down. Next thing I knew it was 8 a.m. and there were a mere 10 minutes left to get my 10-year-old fed and to school. As if her tardies weren't bad enough, I started crawling back into bed again after I dropped her off. Suddenly there weren't enough hours in the day to earn the living that supported us all.

Though I mentioned the problem to my doctor, all he did was offer sleeping pills. But then my younger sister discovered she had a thyroid problem, and her doctor said it runs in families. (Health.com: Why thyroid disorders are so common )

I read a list of the possible symptoms -- exhaustion, depression, constipation, hair loss, and heavy periods, among others -- and all the pieces began to fall into place. I have hypothyroidism. I share the disorder with millions of Americans, most of them women. And today, in many ways, I'm luckier than most. Thanks to my symptoms and a family history, my doctor put me on thyroid medication.

Now, at 44, I'm back to my usual self. My fatigue and constipation are gone and my eyebrows are growing back. I'm lucky. Millions of people aren't getting the help they deserve. You may be one of them.

A thyroid epidemic?

The Colorado Thyroid Disease Prevalence Study, published in 2000, found that as much as 10 percent of the population may have a thyroid disorder, and as many as half of those cases were thought to be undiagnosed. Six years later, that's considered a conservative estimate. Some experts say a woman over 35 has a 30 percent chance of developing hypothyroidism. When I tell people about my condition, the room echoes. They say they have it, too, or report that a friend or family member does. (Health.com: Feeling sluggish? Try sushi )

What's going on?

New thinking seems to be uncovering many more people who suffer from hypothyroidism -- happy news, assuming they get treated. For decades the disorder has usually, but not always, been diagnosed with a blood test, a good place to start if you think you may have it (see "How to Find Answers," at right). In recent years the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommended narrowing the so-called normal range for blood-test scores, catching millions more whose thyroid issues wouldn't have been diagnosed otherwise. Even if your results fail to flag a problem, you may still have symptoms and be a candidate for treatment. (Health.com: Help for hypothyroidism )

Hello, sluggishness

Your thyroid is a tiny, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck. Sometimes described as the body's thermostat, it controls energy flow. Hypothyroidism, also called low thyroid, means the gland isn't producing enough hormones to do its job. The most frequent cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, a condition that causes your body to produce antibodies that attack the thyroid. A shortage of thyroid hormones makes you sluggish at every level.

Slowed digestion causes constipation, sluggish metabolism leads to weight gain and elevated cholesterol, even hair and skin can become dry and coarse (and hair can fall out) because they're not getting enough nutrients. The brain also needs thyroid hormones to use oxygen and stimulate the production of chemicals like serotonin and dopamine that regulate emotions. That's why hypothyroidism can lead to depression and moodiness, not to mention the fuzzy thinking that nearly every thyroid patient complains about. Other symptoms, such as heavy periods, cramps, and a queasy stomach, are trickier for doctors to connect to an underactive thyroid. (Health.com: Making sense of medical tests)

Most of these symptoms may sound familiar--it's not unusual for a 30-, 40-, or 50-something woman to feel tired, bummed out, and a little bit overweight -- and this makes hypothyroidism that much harder to diagnose. In many cases, doctors assume a woman is simply going through perimenopause or suffering mild depression. "It's all too common for a doctor to hear 'tired, moody, forgetful' and offer the patient a prescription for antidepressants," says Richard Shames, M.D., of San Rafael, California, a thyroid specialist.

There are few things more frustrating than getting the wrong treatment. My younger sister was told to take antacids for her nausea. Doctors didn't immediately recognize her hypothyroidism in part because she's thin and didn't feel tired. "It was awful," she says. "My husband would cook us a great dinner, I'd eat one bite and feel so sick I'd have to crawl into bed."

After doing her own research and insisting that her doctor give her a relatively new kind of test, my sister got an accurate diagnosis. It took a while to get the right dosage of medication, and that's not uncommon. (Treatment usually consists of replacement hormones.) But the nausea is gone now.

Good-bye, desperation

"I've seen so many patients come in with the same story," says Stephen E. Langer, M.D., a thyroid specialist in Berkeley, California. "From their symptoms, it's clear that their thyroid is underactive. But either it doesn't show up on standard tests, so their previous doctor refused to prescribe medication, or they are on medication but it's not working."

The desperation seems all the more unjust when you realize that being treated can be a life-affirming event. My friend Cathryn Jakobson Ramin, 49, a fellow writer from Mill Valley, California, is a wonderful example. A few years ago, she noticed that her hands and feet were always cold, her hair was falling out, and her memory was increasingly iffy. After a few years of being told her thyroid tests were normal, Cathryn found her way to a specialist. Once treated, she noticed a huge improvement in her memory.

At a recent party where hypothyroidism came up in conversation, several friends described unsuccessful attempts to get treated for symptoms that seemed suspiciously hypothyroid, while others raved about how much better they felt taking thyroid medication. Cathryn came up to the group, listened for a moment, then announced, "They should put it in the water."

74 Other Ways to Beat Eczema
In our last health alert, I told you about an exciting new prescription drug that can improve and, in some cases, eliminate eczema. I usually don't get excited about prescription drugs. But this may be one that will help. However, there are other excellent ways to treat this irritating skin condition. In most cases, I would try these before getting the prescription.

The first one was also recommended by the researcher who discovered PEA, the prescription drug. Dr. Rebecca Smith also prescribes one of my favorite treatments - though I doubt she knows what it is. She suggests adding one-eighth cup of bleach to a half-full bath tub. Then soak in it for 15 minutes twice a week.

I was shocked to hear her recommend this treatment. Why? Because this treatment is actually an oxidative bath. Bleach is very similar to hydrogen peroxide. There are even formulations that can be given intravenously and orally (only from your integrative physician). Dr. Smith recommends the baths to prevent or treat infections. Bleach contains the powerful oxidant sodium hypochlorite, a compound made by your infection-fighting white blood cells to kill bacteria.

Another way to heal your skin is with shea butter. The oil comes from shea nuts, another powerful hydrating agent. It's available in health food stores.

Action to take: If you have eczema, first eliminate common food allergens. These include dairy, corn, wheat, peanuts, eggs, and chocolate. That alone could go a long way to easing the itch. Consider evening primrose oil (two capsules twice daily) supplements to provide your skin with the much needed omega-6 fatty acids.

Then replace your steroid creams with non-steroidal creams like MimyX (available at most pharmacies with a prescription) or shea butter. These won't damage and thin the collagen in your skin.

As for the weekly oxidation baths, they cost almost nothing. Bleach is very cheap. And it's definitely worth trying. In fact, I recommend these baths for periodic use for just about everyone - not just when you get skin infections. They're great for routine immune maintenance.

If these don't work, then ask your doctor for a prescription for PEA. You'll find amazing relief if you follow this treatment regimen. In fact, most eczema sufferers will see their skin clear up completely.

Yours for better health and medical freedom,
Robert Jay Rowen, MD

75 Low cholesterol 'link' to cancer

People who significantly cut their cholesterol levels with statins may raise the risk of cancer, a study says.

The study of 40,000 people found those with little of the "bad" cholesterol LDL saw one more cancer case per 1,000 than those with higher levels.

The Boston-based researchers could not say if this was a side-effect of the statin or due to the low cholesterol.

They also write in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that the benefits of statins outweigh the risks.

"The analysis doesn't implicate the statin in increasing the risk of cancer," says lead author Richard Karas of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. "The demonstrated benefits of statins in lowering the risk of heart disease remain clear.

"However certain aspects of lowering LDL with statins remain controversial and merit further research."

Reservations

Researchers looked at the summary data from 13 trials of people taking statins - a total of 41,173 patients.

These findings do not change the message that the benefits of taking statins greatly outweigh any potential risks
British Heart Foundation

They examined the relationship between low, medium and high doses of statins and rates of newly diagnosed cancer.

Higher rates of the disease - which were not of any type or location - were observed in the group with the lower levels.

The authors noted their findings were particularly important at a time when more and more trials show significant reductions in LDL levels can greatly benefit cardiovascular health.

Cancer Research UK was wary of the study.

Cancer information officer Dr Alison Ross said: "The findings of this study should be treated with caution - it is based on summary data from previous trials and, as the authors point out themselves, it does not prove that low LDL cholesterol levels can increase cancer risk.

"Much more research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made."

The British Heart Foundation said they had long known of a relationship between low cholesterol and cancer.

"While this highlights an association between low levels of LDL and cancer, this is not the same as saying that low LDL or statin use increases the risk of cancer," said June Davison, cardiac nurse.

"There is overwhelming evidence that lowering LDL cholesterol through statins saves lives by preventing heart attacks and strokes. These findings do not change the message that the benefits of taking statins greatly outweigh any potential risks."

OT: re "Dr." Barrett of Quackwatch/Quackbuster
FYI as we've had lots of discussions about Barrett over the years. I received this from Ted Koren's office re their lawsuit with Barrett.

Barrett Loses Appeal, Leaves Town

Self proclaimed Quackbuster, Stephen Barrett, MD, recently handed crushing defeats by chiropractor Tedd Koren and Ilena Rosenthal, has announced he is leaving his home town and operating base in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

On June 11th, 2007, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania affirmed a lower court dismissal of Barrett's defamation suite against Dr. Koren. Barrett's case was so lacking in merit the judge blocked it from going to the jury. Barrett simply had no case against Dr. Koren. This followed another stunning defeat last month in California. There an appeals court ordered Barrett and crony Terry Polevoy, MD to post bonds of more than $400,000.00 after they lost a defamation case against Illena Rosenthal virtually identical to the Koren case.

Perhaps the fact that lawyers and judges in Allentown are catching on to his intimidation schemes explains why Barrett is moving to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Barrett can run but he can't hide. Chapel Hill collection attorneys are already being asked to locate his assets to pay his unmet legal obligations. Assets of other Quackwatch, Inc., principals might also be sought.

Who Is Steven Barrett, What Are Quackbusters?

Steven Barrett is an unlicensed Pennsylvania psychiatrist, who, though he failed his psychiatric boards and has been criticized for his lack of expertise by several courts, still claims to often advise the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FBI, State Attorneys General, HMOs, Consumer Reports, medical journals and state medical, chiropractic and dental boards.

The insurance industry cites Barrett's highly opinionated "Quackbuster" attacks to deny paying claims for chiropractic and other natural healthcare.

Barrett and the "Quackbusters," a vigilante group of self proclaimed skeptics of any medical or health modality that avoids drugs, surgery or radiation, attack almost all non-conventional healthcare practices as quackery. Ignoring all scientific research to the contrary, they dismiss Gulf War Syndrome, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Chemical Sensitivity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and dietary supplements as rubbish. Double Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling is on their "quack" hit list along with many well known and respected doctors and scientists, including Deepak Chopra, Andrew Weil, and dozens of others.

Barrett claims to give over 500 interviews a year to newspapers, magazines, and television shows, including CNN and the Today Show. He claims to have been a peer reviewer for seven medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, even though he had no license to practice medicine when he did the reviewing.

The Quackbusters run over 70 websites. Millions of people go to them every year. Look up chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy or even vitamin C, as well as almost every other natural health topic, on the Internet and you (and the public) will be led to Quackbuster sites advising you of natural health "dangers." In all these forums Barrett and the Quackbusters relentlessly attack the consumer right to informed choice. These activities continue the AMA's anti-quackery committee's activities that were struck down by federal courts as an illegal restraint of trade in a landmark lawsuit brought by Illinois chiropractor Chester Wilk. They also help insurance companies deny consumer reimbursement claims.

At the same time, Barrett flacks for products like aspartame (NutraSweet), which is the subject of tens of thousands of consumer complaints. Question (asked on Barrett's web site): "An email message is being circulated with many statements to the effect that aspartame is dangerous. How worried should I be?" Answer (from Barrett): "Not at all. The message is pure rubbish."

What Did Dr. Koren Do to Provoke Barrett's Shakedown?

Dr. Tedd Koren is a well-known chiropractor, researcher, writer and lecturer. Barrett sued Dr. Koren in 2003 for calling him a Quackpot, saying he was in big trouble because of a racketeering law suit brought against him and attacking his lack of a medical license in his internet newsletter.

The trial judge and three appeals judges agreed unanimously that these statements were so far from defamation that no jury could be legally allowed to call them defamation. Dr. Koren also said Barrett was "delicensed." One of the three appeals courts judges thought a jury might be able to find this to be defamation. However two appellate judges disagreed and jurors interviewed after the trial said they too saw through Barrett and felt that he was a litigious, ungrounded and biased denier of the truth.

In part jurors formed this view because Barrett testified with great self-satisfaction in the Koren case that he had sued many doctors-close to forty-in similar cases, demanding up to $100,000 if they wished to avoid a costly lawsuit. Some paid-how many is yet to be discovered. Drs. Koren and Rosenthal and a few others did not. Barrett has failed to win a single lawsuit in this shakedown scheme.

Dr. Koren's Legal Team

Well known consumer advocate, James S. (Jim) Turner, general counsel to Koren Publications, who several years earlier had persuaded the FTC to drop an investigation against Dr. Koren (brought at a time when Barrett was a consultant to the FTC), organized and coordinated the legal team that represented Dr. Koren. Attorney Christopher Reid of Allentown, Pennsylvania acted as associate trial counsel and appellate counsel and California health freedom attorney Carlos Negrete acted as trial counsel.,

Mr. Negrete said, "Fortunately for all of his colleagues, Dr. Koren decided not to back down and took the case to trial. Barrett is part of a group of intolerant individuals. I am not certain who the supporters of the so-called Quackbusters are, but they seem to me to be just skinheads with stethoscopes."

During heated and often dramatic courtroom proceedings, Mr. Negrete pointed out many of the questionable statements Barrett includes on his websites attacking chiropractic, as well as facts about Barrett's own credentials that shocked even his supporters.

Mr. Turner says, "It is very important that a very responsible judge in Barrett's hometown recognized that he was making false allegations and dismissed the case. Barrett has cost untoward numbers of consumers pain, anguish and probably serious harm by his misrepresentation of the facts about subjects ranging from acupuncture to zinc."

Mr. Turner, who among other campaigns led the team that got acupuncture needles approved as safe by FDA, worked with a Senate committee to abolish the dysfunctional vaccine regulatory agency, worked with whistleblowers to stop the Swine Flu inoculation campaign, kept aspartame off the market for ten years, and played a key role in lobbying the Organic Food Production Act through Congress (all areas on which the Foundation for Health Choice focuses), says, "Our objective is to end Barrett's abuse of consumers by eliminating the false and misleading information from his website and his entire network of websites and replacing it with sound, useful information for consumers."

Says Dr. Koren, "This is just the beginning. Just as the FTC battle was not about Tedd Koren alone but had ramifications for the entire chiropractic and natural health professions so the Barrett v. Koren battle will have major ramifications for all. We're going to give the Quackbusters a taste of their own medicine. They'll learn how dangerous medicine can be."

"Our mission is not just about revealing the Quackbusters to be the unscientific bigots that they are. We are fighting for health care freedom. One of our goals is to permit parents to make sound decisions about vaccination for their children. There are too many sound health reasons for certain children to avoid vaccination and the government has recognized too many vaccine caused deaths and maimings (over $1.5 billion of compensation has been paid to bereaved families by the federal vaccine injury compensation system since 1988) to allow a non-vaccinated child to be refused day care, school, college, or employment," says Dr. Koren.

Mr. Turner is also lead counsel in a case brought against Barrett by Dr. Don Harrison, the chiropractor who founded and leads Chiropractic Biophysics.

77 Funding for research on parasites
Dundee University has received £1.5m to carry out research into parasites that cause some of the developing world's most serious diseases.
Illnesses such as African sleeping sickness and Chagas' disease kill tens of thousands of people every year.

Scientists have received a grant from the Wellcome Trust to study the biology of the parasites' defence mechanisms, using special 3-D X-ray images.

The information will then be used to develop new treatments.

The grant will provide funding for five new staff and essential equipment.

 SLEEPING SICKNESS
Sleeping sickness is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa
It is passed on by the tsetse fly
It is fatal if left untreated

The trust has previously awarded Dundee University's School of Life Sciences £8.1m to develop new drugs to fight tropical diseases.

This latest research team, led by Professor Bill Hunter, will focus on how to stop the parasites.

He said: "We need to develop new knowledge about the parasites which cause diseases such as African sleeping sickness, diseases for which the current treatments are inadequate.

CHAGAS' DISEASE
Chagas' disease is spread by bites from beetle-like bugs
Many patients do not realise they have been infected
Drugs are toxic and only cure some patients in the early stages of infection

"We also need to improve our understanding of parasite biology - how they work, how they stay alive, what makes them tick essentially.

"That leads to the second stage of the research, which is how do we stop them working and how we can develop the chemical tools which will do just that."

The scientists want to find out how enzymes in the parasites protect them in the human immune system.

The team will build a detailed picture of the chemical structure by shining X-rays through crystals made from the enzymes.

That information will also be used to try and develop new drugs for malaria and tuberculosis.

78 Black Walnut Herb Anti-fungal Parasite Cleanse

Black Walnut is both an anti-fungal and anti-parasite herb and acts as a laxative which expells worms and parasites from the body.

Black walnut trees can grow up to 100 feet tall and they bear delicious, oily nuts that make for superb chocolate chip cookies. Black walnut wood is prized by furniture and cabinet makers.

Black Walnut oxygenates the blood which helps to kill parasites. Black Walnut aids in expelling tapeworms, pinworms and ringworm. It has also been shown to be specific for treatment of Candida Albicans. Black Walnut has been highly thought of as a dependable remedy for "bad blood" diseases such as scrofulous, syphilis and diptheria.

It is antiseptic, therefore it is useful in healing and is useful in all sorts of cleansing programs, especially in expelling parasites. It is also helpful with skin problems such as herpes and eczema. It is a great parasite cleanse.

Black Walnut may also be used to deworm your pets. Open a capsule and mix the powder with the dog or cat food.

Ingredients: Black Walnut hull powder.

79 Metabolic syndrome
Dr Trisha Macnair

For centuries, doctors have recognised the dangers of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, but only recently have they realised there's a strong link between them.

In this article

What is it? What are the symptoms?
What causes it? How can I prevent it?
Advice and support

What is it?
Many people who have either diabetes, high blood pressure or obesity also have one or more of the other conditions, although it may have gone unrecognised.

Individually, each of these conditions can lead to damage to the blood vessels, but together they're far more likely to do harm. People with these conditions in combination become much more likely to experience heart disease, stroke and other conditions related to problems with the blood vessels.

When a person has such a combination, they're said to have metabolic syndrome. This is also sometimes called insulin resistance syndrome (because one of the features is a very high level of the hormone insulin in the blood, which the body doesn’t react to or is 'resistant' to) or syndrome X.

Metabolic syndrome is very common and becoming more so. In the United States, surveys estimate that as many as one in four adults has metabolic syndrome and UK research suggests a similar number of people are affected here. It's more common in certain ethnic groups (such as Asian and Afro-Caribbean people) and among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

What are the symptoms?
The problems found in metabolic syndrome include:

Central obesity, when fat is laid down around the abdomen, rather than spread evenly around the body
Abnormal fat levels in the blood - specifically, high levels of triglycerides and low levels of HDL (or 'good') cholesterol, which can lead to arteriosclerosis (fatty plaques) on the walls of blood vessels
High blood pressure - 130/85 mmHg or above
Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance - an inability to use insulin properly or control blood sugar levels very well, which is a very important factor in metabolic syndrome
A prothrombotic state - an increased tendency to make tiny clots in the blood
A proinflammatory state - an increased tendency to inflammation

What causes it?
Metabolic syndrome is very complex and doctors have yet to work out exactly what goes on in the body at the level of the cells and molecules. However, there seem to be three contributory factors: an inherited genetic tendency, being overweight and physical inactivity.

It seems some people are born with a genetic tendency to develop insulin resistance. If they put on a lot of weight and don’t do enough exercise, they become insulin resistant and develop the metabolic syndrome.

How can I prevent it?
Although much more research has to be done to work out the relationship between different factors in metabolic syndrome, and how drug treatments might be used to help people, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk.

Lifestyle changes can make a big difference, preventing or delaying the development of serious disease. Losing weight and getting active are the top priority. But make sure you get proper advice and support - research has shown that people who join a weight-loss group, for example, are more likely to lose weight and keep it off.

In terms of getting fit, join a gym or find a sport you enjoy. You're more likely to stick at it if you like what you're doing.

Some preventative treatments are also available from your GP. It's important to keep your blood pressure under control, for example. However, some blood pressure treatments, such as diuretics and beta blockers, can actually make metabolic syndrome worse.

Check with your doctor if you're concerned. Drugs to control blood fat and cholesterol levels, and blood glucose levels, are often needed, too.

80 Study: High Fructose Corn Syrup Used in Soda Linked to Diabetes
Tuesday , August 28, 2007

Researchers have found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the development of diabetes, particularly in children.

In a laboratory study of commonly consumed carbonated beverages, the scientists found that drinks containing the syrup had high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by others to have the potential to trigger cell and tissue damage that could cause the disease, which is at epidemic levels.

The findings were reported last week at the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

HFCS is a sweetener found in many foods and beverages, including non-diet soda, baked goods, and condiments. It is has become the sweetener of choice for many food manufacturers because it is cheaper, sweeter and more easy to blend into beverages than table sugar.

Some researchers have suggested that high-fructose corn syrup may contribute to an increased risk of diabetes as well as obesity, a claim which the food industry disputes.

In the current study, Chi-Tang Ho, Ph.D., conducted chemical tests among 11 different carbonated soft drinks containing HFCS. He found "astonishingly high" levels of reactive carbonyls in those beverages.

Carbonyls are undesirable and highly-reactive compounds associated with “unbound” fructose and glucose molecules are believed to cause tissue damage, said Ho, a professor of food science at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

By contrast, reactive carbonyls are not present in table sugar, whose fructose and glucose components are “bound” and chemically stable, the researcher noted.

Reactive carbonyls also are elevated in the blood of individuals with diabetes and linked to the complications of that disease. Based on the study data, Ho estimates that a single can of soda contains about five times the concentration of reactive carbonyls than the concentration found in the blood of an adult person with diabetes.

Ho and his associates also found that adding tea components to drinks containing HFCS may help lower the levels of reactive carbonyls.

The scientists found that adding epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound in tea, significantly reduced the levels of reactive carbonyl species when added to the carbonated soft drinks studied. In some cases, the levels of reactive carbonyls were reduced by half, the researchers say.

“People consume too much high-fructose corn syrup in this country,” said Ho, in a news release. “It’s in way too many food and drink products and there’s growing evidence that it’s bad for you.”

The tea-derived supplement provides a promising way to counter its potentially toxic effects, especially in children who consume a lot of carbonated beverages, he said.

Although eliminating or reducing consumption of HFCS is preferable, the researchers are currently exploring the chemical mechanisms by which tea appears to neutralize the reactivity of the syrup.

81 Morgellons Disease - new epidemic

IMPORTANT information about a new American Epidemic called Morgellons Disease - It's a parasite infection that causes "fibers" to come out of skin lesions - the fibers themselves are alive - MANY people with Morgellons are being told that it is "all in their heads". This has gotten quite a bit of national press lately and we have been flooded with questions and concerns. Here is an informative report:

The Following Six Signs or Symptoms Are The Basis of Morgellons Disease 1. Skin lesions, both spontaneously appearing and self-generated, with intense itching. The former may initially appear as “urticarial-like”, or as “pimple-like” with or without a white center. The latter appear as linear or “picking” excoriations. Even when not self-generated, lesions often progress to open wounds that heal abnormally and usually incompletely. (e.g., heal very slowly with discolored epidermis or seal over with a thick gelatinous outer layer.) 2. Crawling sensations, both within and on the skin surface. Often conceptualized by the patient as “bugs moving, stinging or biting” intermittently. Besides the general dermis, may also involve the scalp, nares, ear canal, and body hair or hair follicles. The sensations are at times related to the presence of easily seen insects, arthropods, and other human and non-human associated parasites that require serious attention from the observing clinician. 3. Fatigue significant enough to interfere with the activities for daily living. 4. Cognitive difficulties, including measurable short term memory and attention deficit, as well as difficulty processing thoughts correctly. Described by patients as "brain fog". 5. Behavioral effects are common in many patients. Many have been or will be diagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. A minority do not show this pattern. Almost all, if previously seen by well-read physicians without prolonged observation, will have been labeled as “Delusional Parasitosis”. Temporal relationship to skin lesion onset is not known. 6.“Fibers” are reported in and on skin lesions. They are generally described by patients as white, but clinicians also report seeing blue, green, red, and black fibers, that fluoresce when viewed under ultraviolet light (Wood's lamp).

Objects described as “granules”, similar in size and shape to sand grains, can occasionally be removed from either broken or intact skin by physicians, but are commonly reported by patients. Patients report seeing black “specks” or “dots” on or in their skin, as well as unusual 1-3 mm “fuzzballs” both in their lesions and on (or falling from) intact skin.

OTHER COMMONLY REPORTED SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS 1. Change in visual acuity. 2. Numerous neurological findings. A variety of neurological symptoms have been reported. Some patients have been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and other well-known and recognized disorders, while others display significant symptoms not falling into any well-defined neurological category. 3. Gastrointestinal symptoms, which may include dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux, and/or changes in bowel habits often similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 4. Neuropsychiatric symptoms and signs, ranging from mood or personality changes to diagnosed disorders including Attention Deficit Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and occasionally frank psychosis. Temporal relationship to skin lesion onset is not known 5. Acute changes in skin texture and pigment. The skin is variously thickened and thinned, with an irregular texture and irregular hyperpigmentation pattern. The changes resemble age associated sun-exposure skin damage, but typically appear acutely 6. Skin examination often reveals excoriated and/or crusted lesions which, on examination with lighted magnification, are seen to have inclusions of variously colored (white, blue, black, or red) fibers. Skin examination may also reveal multiple hyper-pigmented macules, and an increase of what appears to be villous hair on arms and face. 7. Arthralgias are reported by many patients. 8. Associated diagnoses which have been commonly reported in this patient population include Borreliosis (better known as Lyme Disease), Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

OTHER COMMONLY REPORTED OBSERVATIONS 1. Most patients will have sought care from multiple medical care providers. A large number will have been diagnosed with Delusional Parasitosis likely because of the juxtaposition of unexplained skin lesions and sensations and psychiatric overlay. Unfortunately, almost none will have received an appropriate diagnostic physical examination (particularly a microscopic or biopsy examination of lesions), but will have been diagnosed by history alone with grossly incomplete observation. 2. Most of these patients feel abandoned by the traditional medical care system and have sought alternative care providers or have self medicated, seriously compounding an already difficult medical situation

LABORATORY AND OTHER DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION To date, there have been no formal laboratory or imaging studies done in this patient group. There are some reasonably consistent clinical findings, however, that need further examination, in controlled studies, to be corroborated or refuted.

Hormone linked to autistic traits
By Rebecca Morelle
Science reporter, BBC News, York

High levels of a male sex hormone in foetuses are linked to a higher chance of developing autistic traits in childhood, scientists say.

The findings come from an eight-year study relating the development of 253 children to levels of testosterone they were exposed to in the womb.

The scientists said it was unclear whether the hormone was causing the traits or was a by-product of them.

The research was presented at the BA Festival of Science in York.

The research team, from the University of Cambridge, looked at levels of foetal testosterone in the womb by examining samples taken from women undergoing amniocentesis for clinical reasons.

The children were then followed during their development.

At 12 months, 18 months and 46 months, the scientists used tests to spot autism-like traits, such as counting how often a child looked at its mother's face or how large its vocabulary was.

At these early stages, the team found a link between the traits and higher foetal testosterone levels.

But the scientists' latest research results came from a study undertaken when the children were eight years old.

This is the first time autistic traits have been linked to levels of foetal testosterone
Simon Baron-Cohen

The children's mothers filled in a questionnaire called the autism spectrum quotient. This is designed to test the number of autistic traits a child has by examining factors such as social interest and pattern recognition.

Typical questions included whether the child preferred social activities like parties or spending time alone, or whether he or she was quick at picking up numerical patterns, like remembering number plates or phone numbers.

The results were then compared with the pre-natal testosterone levels, which had a 20-fold variation, between 0.1 to 2.05 nanomoles per litre.

Bonnie Auyeng, who carried out the study, said: "The correlation is not perfect, but foetal testosterone will account for about 20% of the variability in [questionnaire] scores. Although this doesn't sound like a very high number, it is statistically significant."

Extreme male brain

Professor Simon Baren-Cohen, who was also involved in the study, said: "This is the first time autistic traits have been linked to levels of foetal testosterone, measured in the womb using amniocenteses."

Animal research has previously linked brain development to foetal testosterone levels, and some believe the hormone may play a causal role in autism.

However, the scientists stressed that the study only showed a link between autistic traits and the hormone, rather than a direct link to autism itself.

Dr Auyeng said: "We're still in the early stages of figuring out what actual role foetal testosterone plays. We don't know if it is causing autistic traits, if it is a by-product of them, or an indication of various interactions.

"We are just not sure yet."

Scientists currently do not know what causes elevated levels of foetal testosterone. Professor Baron-Cohen said previous research suggested that it could be a mixture of genetic and environmental factors.

He said that the hormone could be affecting the brain through altering neural cell connectivity and chemicals that carry messages, known as neurotransmitters.

The team is now planning to follow up its study to test direct links between autism and testosterone levels in foetuses. The group will use Denmark's archive of 90,000 amniocentesis samples and its register of psychiatric diagnoses.

The work is connected to Professor Baron-Cohen's hypothesis suggesting that autism is a version of the extreme male brain.

He said that although researchers had tested this theory at the psychological level, the new studies meant it could now be tested at the biological level.

Autism symptoms reversed in lab
Symptoms of mental retardation and autism have been reversed for the first time in laboratory mice.

US scientists created mice that showed symptoms of Fragile X Syndrome - a leading cause of mental retardation and autism in humans.

They then reversed symptoms of the condition by inhibiting the action of an enzyme in the brain.

The study, by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This implies that future treatment may still be effective even after symptoms are already pronounced
Dr Susumu Tonegawa

Fragile X Syndrome is linked to mutation in a gene carried on the X chromosome called FMR1.

It can cause symptoms ranging from mild learning disabilities to severe autism.

The researchers, based at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, targeted an enzyme called PAK which affects the number, size and shape of connection between brain cells.

They found that inhibiting the enzyme stopped mice with Fragile X Syndrome behaving in erratic ways.

Prior to treatment they showed signs of hyperactivity, purposeless and repetitive movements.

Abnormalities corrected

Further analysis showed that not only were structural abnormalities in connections between brain cells righted, proper electrical communication was restored between the cells.

In the brain small protrusions called dendritic spines are responsible for communication between cells.

People with Fragile X Syndrome have more dendritic spines than usual, but each is longer and thinner, and transmits weaker electric signals.

Blocking PAK activity in the lab mice corrected these abnormalities.

Researcher Dr Susumu Tonegawa stressed that the mice were not treated until a few weeks after symptoms of disease first appeared.

"This implies that future treatment may still be effective even after symptoms are already pronounced," he said.

Professor Eric Klann, of New York University's Center for Neural Science, agreed that the research was potentially significant.

He said: "This is very exciting because it suggests that PAK inhibitors could be used for therapeutic purposes to reverse already established mental impairments in fragile X children."

Does vitamin C cure cancer or not? Here's the final answer...

Vitamin C has been labeled as a cure for just about every disease we know. Some of those claims are true; some are not. So when I say that vitamin C can cure cancer, am I just adding to the hoopla? Didn't scientists prove it doesn't work? Well, here's the real story.

You already know about Linus Pauling. He is the pioneer who put vitamin C on the map and was also a two-time Nobel laureate. That alone should have given him awesome credibility. But since he was a chemist and not a physician, mainstream medicine scoffed at him. He proposed a simple hypothesis: Enough vitamin C should kill cancer cells.

Researchers studied his proposition. But there were some severe flaws in their studies - flaws that seemed deliberate. I'll tell you how in a moment. The failed studies kicked back the vitamin C and cancer story by two decades.

It now appears that Pauling was right. A Canadian journal told the story of three patients with advanced cancer. One was a 49-year-old man with terminal bladder cancer. He refused poisons (chemotherapy). Instead, he got vitamin C in 1996. Not only did it cure his cancer, but he was still cancer free nine years later.

Another patient, a 66-year-old woman, had an aggressive lymphoma with a "dismal prognosis" in 1995. She was similarly treated and still alive 10 years later.

Then there's a 51-year-old woman with kidney cancer that spread to her lungs. She was diagnosed in 1995. She had a normal chest X-ray two years later. Pathologist confirmed the findings.

Why did the earlier studies fail to prove Pauling's hypothesis? That research used oral vitamin C rather than the IV route these patients received. Alternative physicians deplored the poorly designed research. We knew that oral doses can never come close to the blood levels provided by IV - the levels needed to kill cancer.

Now we're finally seeing studies from the National Institutes of Health that prove these results. In one study, Dr. Mark Levine showed that only IV vitamin C can achieve the high levels necessary to kill cancer. You see, your kidney will get rid of vitamin C as fast as your gut can absorb it. But given intravenously, the IV can far exceed your kidney's ability to eliminate it. So for a protracted time, you can get super high blood levels.

Dr. Levine has brilliantly shown that vitamin C is metabolized to hydrogen peroxide (our old friend) in the immediate vicinity of cancer cells. Peroxide is totally permeable to the cell membrane. It will quickly enter any cell. But cancer cells are vulnerable to peroxide, while normal cells are rather invulnerable.

Artemisinin, which I reported on several years ago, also has a peroxide connection. It carries a peroxide and is selectively toxic to cancer cells. By IV route (only), vitamin C can reach levels of peroxide lethal to malignant cells long enough to kill them.

I recently got an update from my friend Chuck Mary, MD of New Orleans. He has been using absolutely massive doses of vitamin C - up to 300 grams per day. That's 300,000 mg! He's got a long string of apparent remissions from some highly advanced cancers. I am very impressed.

Vitamin C is not a particularly expensive therapy. It does involve intravenous infusions. If you have cancer, talk to your integrative physician about vitamin C therapy. And even if you do choose to do chemo, IV vitamin C can dramatically reduce the toxicity while helping the desirable effects of the chemo.

Yours for better health and medical freedom,
Robert Jay Rowen, MD

How to double niacin's ability to treat high cholesterol

I've used niacin in my clinic for years to help my patients treat their high cholesterol. It's a fantastic nutrient that actually increases your HDL. The higher your HDL, the better your body deals with LDL (bad) cholesterol.

As good as niacin is, I've found that sometimes it doesn't increase good cholesterol enough. But many years ago, I found a way to greatly increase the effectiveness of niacin.

And now, a study has confirmed what my patients and subscribers have known for years. The breakthrough study came from the Giovanni Lorenzini Medical Foundation. The Foundation sponsored two studies on niacin and fish oil. Neither study received any commercial support.

The first study evaluated 14 patients with high triglycerides, low HDL, and normal LDL levels. Seven received 1 gm of immediate release niacin three times daily plus 3.4 gm of omega-3 fish oil. The other seven received a placebo.

After only seven weeks, the treated patients had fantastic results. Their triglycerides dropped an average of 52% and their HDL raised 33%. The placebo patients had an average rise in triglycerides of 10% and HDL rose by only 4%.

The results astonished one of the researchers, William Harris, PhD (professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City). He said that the addition of fish oil almost doubled the previously published effectiveness of niacin.

A small second study performed in seven type-2 diabetics confirmed Dr. Harris's conclusion. Serum triglycerides fell a whopping 52% from 238 to 114 mg/dL after 16 weeks of treatment. HDL rose from 40 to 63 mg/dL, a whopping 58% increase in this "good" cholesterol. The placebo did nothing. The combination had no effect on LDL cholesterol or hemoglobin A1c. The latter is a measure of long-term blood sugar levels. Researchers used the same seven patients as their own controls. When switched back to placebo, their numbers returned to baseline.

Folks, what more could you ask for? This is a fantastic and inexpensive way to boost your body's ability to handle cholesterol, with no side effects. It's great to see this treatment gaining acceptance, even in the mainstream. If you're taking niacin to treat your cholesterol, make sure you add fish oil to your treatment as well. You'll be amazed at the added benefit.

Yours for better health and medical freedom,
